3rd Person View (3PV) is not currently available for game play (except when your mech gets killed), or during spectator mode. IMO, it will hopefully remain that way. It would be nice if 3PV was available in a replay after the game, if "replay" should ever become available.

This is probably already discussed, but the forums are so full of chaff, I am not finding the solution to my puzzle. In training grounds, there is talk of selecting your surviving teammate to watch but no control anywhere to make a voluntary selection. Anyone have a magic wizard command for this?

I am not sure I understood you fully. But when you die, to the left there is a window showing whom you are observing. When you move mouse over that window, there are two arrows, where you can chose whom to observe.

Any sort of external vision will be abused. Whether as complex as "pop-tarting" or as simple as teammates spectating eachother for more heads-up awareness. I'd rather we just not have it at all in the game.
If we ever get the ability to record match activity, and then replay the entire battlefield? Yeah, it'd be great to be able to ghost all over and view things from different angles.
But as far as third-person mech control? No, that's just crap. Learning to pilot with a limited field of view and controlling your blind spots is a skill this game requires.
