I was reading and article mentioned on Killscreen: http://terranova.blo...e-of-swtor.html and it occurred to me that MWO is certainly a game and not a world.

Here's the part I like:

Quote

What makes a world different from a game? Well, in a world, there's downtime and exploration and life. Downtime is, moments when there's nothing to do. You just be. And it is nonetheless interesting. Exploration is, you go places simply to see things, to discover them. You don't get a reward, you just go look. It's a cave with artwork in the bottom, and nothing else. It's a desert to cross, in which there's an oasis with a palm and an interesting little bear who sings rhymes. And nothing else. Life is, when you go to a place and there are people just being there. They're not on a quest, they're not grinding a craft, they're not shopping. They are simply being.

Current MMOGs have lost elements like this, believing them to be boring. EVE has them in spades. So EVE can charge subscriptions - people like to quasi-live in EVE. Nobody wants to quasi-live in SWTOR, or, it is not possible to just live there. You can't live on a race track. Race tracks are for racing. You go around a few times and quit. Why subscribe to that?

That last part sounds pretty much exactly like MWO. Drop, tweak, repeat. "You go around a few times and quit." What could MWO do to be more like a world, rather than just a game?

To start off the discussion, I'll reiterate my very modest suggestion for an in-game lobby of some kind. Talking to each other is one way in which MWO could support "downtime" and "life".

An in-game lobby would be awesome, you don't get enough time to communicate at the start of the drop.

The game as is, is a game. It can be a world. It is said to become a world... someday! :D

Community warfare will be what makes the game a world, when it gets implemented. Whether or not I want to live in it depends on it's implementation.

I know this is sort of pie in the sky at this point in the development, but designing a full fledged dropship for players and groups to explore in pilot form. How awesome would it be to sit on the ship's bridge as you travel to whichever world you want to fight over. Then you drop out of hyperspace into orbit and you get a magnificent view of the planet.

Players could walk around the areas where their mechs are stored and inspect them from the perspective of a pilot on the ground. This would greatly reinforce just how big mechs are.

Moving beyond that and going from "pie in the sky" to "never going to happen", allow players to fly their dropships around looking for enemies and then fighting whoever you come across.

The initial assertion doesn't really apply to MWO at all. It's not an MMO, Just as the Battlefields and Call Of Dutys aren't MMOs. And its mechanically closed comparison is to World Of Tanks, which is also not an MMO. Even Planetside 2 is very barely an MMO and that too only because the continents/battlefields are persistent.

Frankly I don't think MWO needs to be a 'world'. Because it's simply not reflected by the current framework.

However, I will heartily support an in-game chat lobby. I think the MWO could greatly, and I mean GREATLY benefit from one.

The first part of creating a "world" similar to WoT and WoW is to have in-game chat and ways for people that have no coonections with each other to play with each other. A perfect example is that I was sent here from Reddit and there is no way for me to connect with anyone there except through our out of game client.

The second and more important part is to make it enjoyable for new players and they are doing that with the new economy change many of us have been asking for. My online and personal friends have all left the game due to the problems with the Trial mechs. People hate the grind and hate it when they meet those that abuse the mechs by starting and dropping the game for cb.

My first point is what creates a community that creates a successful game but requires the second point to not create a ghost town.

I kind of like this. I'd be fun to have activities in the game that weren't about winning or losing, grinding CB/XP and optimizing builds. Activeties where we get to play the Mechwarrior not just the 'Mech. Just hanging out in Inner Sphere.

Now you made me wan't to customize my Mechwarrior. Why? No reason, I just like to know what I look like. (Looking at my generic gloves and boots using free look doesn't cut it)

I remember one time when I was capping with my team. I was just standing around, looking at the other 'mechs, when I realized: I wish I could see the Mechwarriors inside. But there are no Mechwarriors in Mechwarrior online, just (giant) empty robots... :(

For me, one of greatest things about Battletech is the fluff, the stories about the Mechwarriors piloting the 'mechs etc.
