When for example my laser says "270m", does that mean it work up till 270m? Does it work most effective at 270m, and does less damage if the target gets closer or further? Perhaps only further but not when the target gets closer?
What exactly does it mean?

Energy and Ballistic type weapons go roughly double the range listed at ever decreasing damage. Missile weapons go just the distance listed.

Range is effective range. It still does damage further out but not as much.

It means that 270m is its maximum effective range. After that the damage drops off.

"Range on anything but the missiles designates the effective range of the weapon, where full damage can be applied. The distance between range and max range designates where damage tapers over distance. For missiles SRMs apply full damage at 0-270, nothing further and LRMs apply full damage (if they are able to hit) up to their max range. Standard PPCs have a minimum range of 90M."

The listed range is the maximum range at which you deal full damage.

For missiles it's the maximum range *period*
For ballistics/lasers it's less than the absolute maximum range, but shooting further does less damage.

Missiles = Exact range

Energy = Optimal range, with a falloff extending to 2x optimal (falling off to 0 damage at 2x optimal at a linear rate from full damage at optimal zero damage 2x falloff)

Ballistic = Optimal range, with a falloff extending to 3x optimal range (falling off to 0 damage at 3x optimal at a linear rate from full damage at optimal to zero damage at 3x optimal)
