I've recently installed MWO and played a few games, but my FPS rarely reaches at or above 20. Most of the time, it hovers around 15, and it drops to 4-7 when getting hit/other explosions on screen.
A few specs: I've got Windows 7 64 bit with an intel core i3. I've got plenty of memory space, and my GPU is an ATI Radeon 5000 Series, with drivers last updated in 2011 (I can't find more recent updates). DirectX is updated as well.

Please help.

which gen I3?

I currently am running
Win7 64
I3-2100 (runs roughly 75% duty on all 4 threads in a match)
8gb mem (rarely use more that 5 with a bunch of stuff open while playing)
hd6770 (ingame uses about 80% gpu and just about all of the memory 600mb - 800mb of 1gb)
and I get 18 - 22 in a brawl and 45 - 60 out of one.

You said a 5000 series, what is the exact model as that covers from crappy to decent cards
A Radeon HD5670 equates to the min spec Nvidia card a 5770 or 5830 is roughly equal to what I run (decent mainstream card) any of the 5800 (besides the 5830) or 5900 family of cards are still smoking hot cards today.

TomsHardware Graphics Card Hierarchy will give you a rough idea of what compares to what.

Even first gen I3 has 4 threads so the fact that you are getting such low fps has me thinking it may be due to your Video card.

hai, and not enough details, such as the first part of the dxdiag (down to and including sound card). Atm we do not know if it is a laptop or desktop model either.

It's a Dell inspiron N5010. Not quite sure what else you're asking for, so I just took some of the dxdiag info and copy-pasted it here. :)

1. Tis a laptop/notebook/etc :) Its performance will differ from a desktop.
2. Game is not optimized yet for low end systems, especially laptops.
3. Can of compressed air to clean out dust build up on the heatsinks on a regular basis.
4. That it does not have Turbo technology is a good thing (turbos on only one core)
5. In the Catalyst, set everything to application control
6. Power Options set to full performance.

There appears to be few bugs in the most recent patch. Set to lowest settings except Shadows, raise it up a few bars.

Disable File indexing and Windows Media Sharing. And run a program to keep eye on heat.

Your laptop has a Generation 1 I3, and ati mobility radeon hd 5470. What is really killing your FPS is that your Graphics card is so far below the minimum specs. If you check this chart you will see that the card you have is 9 tiers below the minimum spec card. Your I3 chip also runs at about 30% of the second gen I3's per this INTEL ARK CHART mainly due to multiplier and Fsb differences.

@Tari Cabot I've done most of what you've pointed out, and performance has only improved slightly (still semi unplayable).
I guess there's not much I can do short of getting new hardware?

Unfortunately, that would be correct in my opinion. Laptops are great for portability but you trade off performance and the ability to upgrade to get that portability it in most cases.

One more thing... the FPS still doesn't rise above 20 when I'm in the game lobby/mech lab. Is this normal?

There be your problems.
Weak CPU and GPU.
The 5470 be not designed for the games.

that is maybe true BUT I run MWO on my system atm without a GPU my actual GPU is the intel HD 4000 on a i5 3570k
guess what guys I can play this game with 30 frames. And guess what next? My stats looks better than those above me ^_^
Try to write this in your user.cfg in your MWO folder. You also can modify this lower for more frames.

It is, I dont have more than 37 frames in the mechlab because the system is to weak. With my dead GPU it was always on 60 also ingame.

Actually your on-chip Intel 4000 is a stronger gpu than his. But if he can get it to work with your user.cfg great! The CPU is what matters more in this game than the gpu, but as he has an I3 I figured that the gpu was the limiting factor.

Yep my onboard gpu has a bit more power but I dont know how this affects my cpu power when he must do both things for this game. With my dead graphic card , my cpu was on 35% on 4 cores and that was it. So I guess his cpu can do that too. th I3 is surely weaker for converting and other stuff but for gaming it must done his job when you dont play at maximum.
I was able to play this game with a better quality on my older AMD phenom 9950B and this cpu really dont have a good performance. I was able to play it on max with a modern card on the AMD system. Sure cpu matters but when you got a quad it should do it.
