So given this bit here that Paul posted in Command Chair, does this mean that if some brand spankin newbie just happens to briefly pass a laser over my near cored torso and kills me I'll lose "ranking"?
Or will it go by whatever player did the most damage to you?

It's difficult to measure in a random pug game. I would think it would be better if it was Team Average Rating vs Team Average Rating. If you get saddled with a team of low-rated players, it wouldn't be your fault (too much) if you lost to a team full of high rated players.
They also need to separate it for pug games and 8-man team games. Until they allow you to create official teams with a fixed roster to get team ratings (like in WoW), it's gonna be hard to imagine how the system will work with randoms.
