I stumbled across a link for the game, checked it out and downloaded. I've played the MW franchise since MW2, and was really excited with what I saw. Over the last two days, it's been a steep and interesting learning curve. Between having to manually repair corrupted .pak files, (now less) persistent CTD's, and even a couple good old fashioned system crashes, it's been pretty frustrating.

..but I'm okay with that.

Having played tabletop Battletech and most of the games through the Mechwarrior franchise's history, I can say that MWO feels the most accurate conversion of the original tabletop. So thanks to everyone working on the project, and I hope that things continue to improve, you've done a good job just getting to this point.

I've also gotten to the point where I've encountered each end of the spectrum in regards to the player base. That's just atypical of any online game, and I've got thick skin. :( For those starting out, try to filter out the usual talking-down garbage and look for the occasional piece of good advice.

Case in point, I just bought my first mech and went out on my first mission with it. End game comes down to me and a Yenlowang in the enemy base, and I start circle strafing. I'm still not as smooth with controls as I would like, and the game didn't help by resetting all of my video settings on the crash at the end of the previous round. I was playing in a window about half the size of my screen, with v-sync turned on. Needless to say, getting guns on target wasn't exactly easy.

Once it was down to me, my team was very quick to start critiquing my lack of performance, to the degree where it was typical internet offensive. But there was one player who just started giving me advice, telling me what I needed to change. Unfortunately, their advice didn't help much as my biggest enemy was the choppy movement onscreen, but it stood out. Of the 4 people calling me names and telling me how terrible I was, one person was trying to help me get that win.

I'd rather be like that one person. I finally ended up winning. My only regret is I was so busy trying not to get my *** waxed and win, I didn't get the name of the person who wasn't being an *** to say thanks.

That's well and good. I'm glad you got that win. Congratulations on getting your first mech! Be sure to read up before getting those upgrades as not all of them are going to be beneficial. The game works on having several tradeoffs and some tradeoffs are heavier than others (FF armor, XL engines) in terms of cost.

Hopefully they will add things like "Recently Played With" lists like in D3 or an after match chat lobby so you can talk with your previous team mates and maybe even the option of forming a group with them. We'll see. Don't let the bugs and trolls get to you too much. :)

Howdy, and welcome!

Normally, I would list some guides here, but there's quite a few now for new players.

Drop in to the general guides forum for general gameplay tips, and lots of threads for new starters:

http://mwomercs.com/...rum/95-general/

If you search for 'new starters' you'll get lots of guides, and even more helpful, search for 'trial mech guide', filter out all the ones with 'sucks' as a suffix, and you'll be golden. Speed read them, and you'll get some great tips. Trial mechs ALL suck to varying degrees, so anything you can do to hasten the purchase of your very own shiny stompy engine of doom, the better.

The battlemechs guide forum is similarly awesome:

http://mwomercs.com/...96-battlemechs/

Aaaand one that I would recommend you read is Elizanders budget saving guide:

http://mwomercs.com/...e-as-of-nov-14/

It has some fantastic tips in there, but is really only relevant once you've purchased your own (game changing) first mech. After this, one of the roughest things to get to grips with is the C-Bill grind that holds you back from moving on to bigger, better, more stompy killing machines. This guide helped me immensely.

Fast Commandos with ECM and streaks are stupendously powerful at the moment, FYI, so they make a fantastic, slightly overpowered and horrifyingly annoying first purchase. Your opponents will hate you, but you'll be cackling all the way to the bank!

Second-lastly, the game changes largely for the better when you get into a team, so have a look at some of the pinned guides on teamspeak. There are around 11,256 clans that would also love to have new blood.

And lastly...the trolls around here are abnormally large, vitriolic and powerful, but once you harness the awesome power of IGNORING, you'll have a great time. Have fun and good hunting!

Just picked up my Commando. Had enough saved to ECM it, but herped and bought the wrong variant. One painstaking lesson in reduced rate refund later.....

You shouldn't sell your mechs. Just keep them in the mechbay, you need three to get to elite in them anyways.

Since folks seem to have taken care of guidance on this thread I'd just like to take the opportunity to welcome a new pilot to the fray. Keep at it, study the resources at your disposal and definitely try and hit the various Teamspeak servers for great folks to play with (NGNG Outreach, Comstar USA, etc) you'll be ripping up the battlefield in no time. Stay classy Mechwarrior

Welcome to the game. I like to try and give out pointers while I'm in spectator mode, I hope it helps relieve some frustration of newer pilots instead of adding more. The whole community benefits from better pilots. Good hunting!

Welcome to the game That DARN wolf.

I will always spectate a game after death, mostly to keep learning and sometimes to give constructive advice.

The fact that you managed to stay alive until the end of the match in a fragile Commando speaks that you have already passed one learning hurtle.

Knowing how to circle an enemy just right, so that you can shoot him but he can't hit you, takes practice. In a Commando, that means taking advantage of your arm mounted weapons via the arm target reticule. I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. Good luck and see you on the battlefield!
