This is mostly for visual effects, but also something to make the flamer more memorable and possibly arguably useful.
Simply put, leave some lingering fire particle effects on 'mechs hit with the flamer, so it's very clear that's the 'mech that's been being hit with them. The fire/smoke could even have a similar cockpit-blocking visual effect similar to what happens when you get hit WITH the Flamer, but lingering, giving it an entire niche as a "blinding weapon."
In short, a 5-10 second burn out time of a 'mech appearing to be on fire would make this weapon vastly more memorable and possibly even useful. It's easy to single out a target, esp. one that can't see through all the smoke.
Visual Suggestions: Have Flames Stick To 'mechs.
