I liked dual-gauss CTF-3D, but the jump jet nerf has really put a damper on it.

The 3D did basically the same thing, but jumping allowed it to spot the enemy over ridges and help break stalemates. The JJ nerf makes the K2 superior again though.

You should probably first figure out which weapon system you want to use. For sniping you're basically limited to AC/2 boating, PPCs or Gauss rifles. All can be effective at long range engagements when used properly.

K2 has always been top, the cataphract never knocked it off its podium. The cataphract has to worry about arm convergence and the fact that the weapons are lower meaning you have to expose yourself more when you pop on a hill to snipe, plus other issues such as bigger mech etc. The K2 meanwhile is much harder to LT/RT kill which makes XLs much safer, its arms are much smaller and can be unarmored etc etc

I've been enjoying PPCs on the Stalker and Cataphract.
One big reason:
Stalker arm mounts and Cataphract torso mounts are very high up, which means that it's easy to go "hull down" behind a hill while sniping, and show only a small portion of your mech.

Flame hero dragon's ballistic and Hunch G/H Ballistic have the same thing going for them as well.

K-2, but ditch the noob tube gausspult and go with an ERPPC and large pulse laser. That way you can fit a standard engine and play chase the K-2

and all the while the awesome series of 3 ppc/erppc should've been an obvious choice... not in MWO it ain't simply casue ppc's are broke and a catapult can mount 2 gauss and the cataphract. an atlas and an awesome can't be snipers yet the cata's can? something's a miss here...

The problem I find with Atlas is that the hardpoints are mounted very low, and you are a very large target for return fire.
Awesome, I'd imagine the same holds true, especially as the awesome has a huge front profile, but a tiny side profile.

Realistically, who'd design a long-range fire support mech which has such a gigantic frontal profile? Seriously the original artists were on crack sometimes.

I doubt they'd go for bipedal mechs if they were aiming for realism.

the K2 with dual gauss is the best due to torso convergence completely outclassing arm convergence for sniping.

Personally I prefer the Cataphract CTF-4X, loaded with a Gauss Rifle in each arm.
  • You have the same long range punch as an ERPPC loadout, and don't have the minimum range problems, and more punch at closer ranges.
  • The CTF arms offer a wider traversal arc than the CPLT-K2 giving it the advantage there, again useful in brawls. I find this outweighs the comparative lack of "hull down".
  • The CTF-3D can fit twin Gauss Rifles and has a higher engine rating potential, but I found I had problems with convergence (one is torso mounted, the other arm mounted).
  • If you have money to burn, consider the CTF-IM (Ilya Muromets) Hero Mech. It's the only mech currently available that can mount 3 Gauss Rifles. The Alpha on them is ludicrous, but you pay for it in speed and survivability. I guess this is why most Muromets pilots I've seen have triple UAC5s instead.

If you want to go PPC/ERPPC for sniping though, don't overlook the Awesome. It's got the mount points and weight to cope with 4 of them. Don't forget to pack your double heatsinks and desk fan though...

I'll throw this in the mix. My Atlas D-DS with Gauss and an ER PPC. Yes it has ECM cause I don't know a sniper worth his salt that doesn't use "Camo" to remain undetected! I back up the Main weapons with 3 SRM6.

Probably the Cicada 3m, dual PPCs or a gauss. I mean it can use it's ECM to avoid detection and move to a new location quickly.
