The 3D did basically the same thing, but jumping allowed it to spot the enemy over ridges and help break stalemates. The JJ nerf makes the K2 superior again though.

One big reason:
Stalker arm mounts and Cataphract torso mounts are very high up, which means that it's easy to go "hull down" behind a hill while sniping, and show only a small portion of your mech.
Flame hero dragon's ballistic and Hunch G/H Ballistic have the same thing going for them as well.

Awesome, I'd imagine the same holds true, especially as the awesome has a huge front profile, but a tiny side profile.
Realistically, who'd design a long-range fire support mech which has such a gigantic frontal profile? Seriously the original artists were on crack sometimes.

I doubt they'd go for bipedal mechs if they were aiming for realism.

- You have the same long range punch as an ERPPC loadout, and don't have the minimum range problems, and more punch at closer ranges.
- The CTF arms offer a wider traversal arc than the CPLT-K2 giving it the advantage there, again useful in brawls. I find this outweighs the comparative lack of "hull down".
- The CTF-3D can fit twin Gauss Rifles and has a higher engine rating potential, but I found I had problems with convergence (one is torso mounted, the other arm mounted).
- If you have money to burn, consider the CTF-IM (Ilya Muromets) Hero Mech. It's the only mech currently available that can mount 3 Gauss Rifles. The Alpha on them is ludicrous, but you pay for it in speed and survivability. I guess this is why most Muromets pilots I've seen have triple UAC5s instead.
If you want to go PPC/ERPPC for sniping though, don't overlook the Awesome. It's got the mount points and weight to cope with 4 of them. Don't forget to pack your double heatsinks and desk fan though...
