Being a free cam or a dynamic one à-la GTA's ''useless cinematic cam that makes it impossible to play'' would make for much more entertaining spectating... and think of the potential awesome videos that could be made from that!
Not asking crazy replay features à-la Halo 3 but, ya know, something else than being stuck in viewing another team-member in first-person. Sure, leave THAT option there, but feeling like an actual spectator to the mahem going on would be nice.

Free/cinematic Cam In Spectator Mode?

the problem is, that you could recon the enemy team for your teammembers and even if you restrict dead players to chat to dead players only, people on a voicesever could still communicate.
I think there should be a replay function like in World of Tanks but right now this is a very low priority thing

Or... disable chat altogether after having exploded? After all, dead men tell no tales!
I can already keep on relaying intel as it is after I die if I got ambushed somewhere (ei: where I got killed and by what). I don't do it, but the current camera system doesn't prevent the issue. I'm just surprised we can still chat in team channel - or, well, chat period - after having died.
I've seen people yell at remaining team members what to take out off the enemy mechs' components in attempt to win in not-so-favourable conditions based mostly on what info they'd receive from the HUD of said team members they were ''spectating'' in or from what they were shooting at before they got shot down.

Spoiler
VOIP is still a problem. And before you suggest that an integrated VOIP could mute a dead player to the living ones, you could still circumvent that by using a third party VOIP program. And I'd rather PGI not start scanning my computer for random programs while I play.
Maybe you could use the system to record impressive moments in the game by itself, and play them in an eventual after-game lobby?

That could be nice, but since most games are grind-fests... would people bother watching them? I mean, given the amount of ''disconnects upon death'' I've seen, I think I'm one of the few who stick in-game until the end, even if I died first! Perhaps people quit because either the spectator mode is a little glitchy right now (first person views twitching a lot, a lot more with Lights) or because it's just restricted to first-person... either way, I honestly didn't think that suggestion through, now that you've mentioned the VOIP variable.

It could save battles for replay and let you fly anywhere. That would be cool!

Free roam cam is a no no, people cheat too much. Cannot be done and made fair.
I would like a mode where a match can be setup to recorded and the view point of all 'mechs is recorded and available for playback where you could switch from POV to POV to POV on demand. This would make for great YouTube commentary in an e-sport like manner.

Total agree, no free cam. Even the ECM cutting off chat right now is bypassed by groups using C3 chat or other voip outside the game.
os in conclusion NO unless you want premade groups becomes even more unbeatable.
