Every mech should have a flamer OR an MG by default, as a utility item.

As it is, you will never be able to balance these items if they consume a slot+weight.

They should function more like a knife in an FPS - everyone has one, and its only useful in limited circumstances.

MG = crit generator through exposed internals

Flamer = strategic heat generator/vision obscurer.

I'm pretty sure those are exactly what the weapons are for. The problem is that they haven't fixed them to work in that capacity.

Apparently PGI want to up the damage and heat on these things. I'd rather load inferno missiles *harhar* But i take the damage increase on these other two. I think there is no need to make these weapons usefull, just keep them in for the fun of it. Sometimes people like to mess around with them.
Andmaybe someday we find something to shoot at with these weapons... maybe trees? Setting forrest ablaze would be nice.

MG is supposed to be the lowend ballistics weapon. Today it's just ballistics, but hardly a weapon. Once it gets a damage boost it'll be a legitimate item to equip. Light weight, with damage equivalent to an AC/2 but with nearly zero range, gobs of ammo, and no heat.

flamers make a great smoke screen. fire at enemy cockpit, and watch the confusion build.

i have 2 on a jenner and they are the best defense i could ever ask for.

Luckily the red reticle surrounding your 'mech is visible through the flame and smoke and smart pilots aim for that ;-)

the big box does give some indication but the best you can do with that is aim center of mass.

flamers also keep snipers from hitting distant team members accurately as well.
