You know you are old when your wife plays ABBA "dancing queen" and you catch yourself singing along!
A little humor for the old timers out there. Remember, if anyone ever tells you "anytime" when it comes to a product, run like hell or go postal with your favorite needler pistol.
To all the postal carriers out there, please forgive me for my crude reference.

Howdy,
I think the Marik Militia would be a perfect place for us to lay our heads. Even though my first posting was with the Defender of Andurien the Militia is a perfect substitute.
You have my vote.
How does the 1st Marik Militia sound? It has a great history and it did a number on the DoA during the war.

The 1st Marik Militia is regarded as the flagship regiment of that collection of regiments.
Honestly when I think of "Old Guard" regiments within the FWLM, the Orloff Grenadier regiments come to mind. Traditionally, acceptance into the Grenaders was a rare privilege. You had to have at least 5 years service in the FWLM, and have either a Distinguished Service Award or be a member of the Order of the Saber. Induction into the unit involves a secret initiation ceremony in which new members pledge never to fight against the regiment or House Orloff in battle. Some of these traditions were stripped away in 3046 with the Military Reorganization Act under Thomas Marik's reforms but others just went "underground", like the initiation ceremony, and continue to exist in 3050. The Grenadiers have done all that they can to preserve their traditions and status. I always felt like with the Orloff Grenadiers you were joining a Knight order, fraternity, or becoming a Freemason, something along those lines.
Also each Orloff Grenadier regiment is very different in atmosphere, giving you some options. The 1st Grenadiers, assigned to Vanra, are a good combat unit but mostly parade around all day (when there isn't a war on). Vanra's culture emphasizes proper behavior, and the upper class live like European royalty of the Tudor days. There is a lot of horseriding and hunting and dances and even sword duels.
By comparison the 6th and 8th Grenadiers have spent most of their history out near the periphery and are much more rough and tumble, known for belching whenever they darn well please and bragging about dishing out frontier justice.
Don't forget that the Orloff Grenadiers also have many graduates of the Orloff Military Academy, who get a ceremonial dirk upon graduation that they can wear on their uniform, it marks them as an Orloff graduate and collectively all those graduates are widely known as the "Orloff Mafia" because so many of them end up in senior posts throughout the FWLM.
I might also recommend the 5th Brigade of the Fusiliers of Oriente. Better known as Boltan's Rangers, they have a history going back to the Star League when they were the independent 208th Hussar Regulars. Many of the unit's members can trace their history back to those origins. The regiment is also known for its Star League era-tech library. its insignia is the old Star League Cameron Star and the regiment uses old Star League parade color schemes. It doesn't get much more "Old Guard" than that unless you look to the Northwind Highlanders and Eridani Light Horse.

Two other units that I have always liked have been the 21st Centauri Lancers (merc but always loyal) or the Free Worlds Guards the cream of the crop goes here.
I for one would rather keep this unit within the boarders of House Marik or in general within the League like the Free Worlds Guards and away from the other like House Orloff, Stewart, Oriente or any other league member.
But this as all things pertaining to our FWL is always up for debate.
