I'd go with either 9M / 8T / 8R if you want to stick to the Awesomes, the 8Q is the "weakest" of them all imo.

Well, if the 8q is the weakest, then it seems I've gotten it out of the way first! :)

Actually, over the past couple of days, it's been treating me much better - and I'm finally up to 12mcb, all without any MC investment. In fact, it's enough to reach the 9m/DDC decision gate.

...but if I get a different 8... the grind back up to the decision gate is a bit shorter... and I need a third anyway...

The saga of the Purple Awesome shall continue! Some way! ;)

4SP - cheap and effective

Endo
DHS
250std
4x MLas
2x Srm6 with 3t of ammo
6x DHS

Goes 89.x km/h with elite, runs pretty hot (but you are not new to the game ^^) is very agile with its insane torso twist and has 4x arm mounted lasers which allevate the hunchbacks bad vertical firing arcs.

Took mine out yesterday after having neglected it for to long, its such a pleasure to pilot it.

Spoiler

9M - not cheap but so boss

DHS
380XL
1x LLas (RA)
3x MLas (CT)
3x Srm4 with 3t of ammo
13x DHS (!)

You can easily swap stuff with this engine while maintaining loads of DHS. Other variants i run are with 4x MPlas + 3x Srm4 or 6x MPlas + 1x Srm6, they "sound" better. You can even cram in a ER PPC + 3 streaks and keep the 23 DHS. I like it so much that i even forked out MC for a custom skin :)

Spoiler

Edit: You could give in to the dark-side and buy a 3L...

I just quote myself to not have to write it all down again ;)

TLDR: The 9M is awesome! Youll have an easier time with a D-DC but you will lose your hero status!

I haven't gone over to the dark side, don't worry. :) Tinkering with an 8r to pick up basic effs, then working toward the 9m. It's a nice roadmap, and I'm keeping the 8q for sentimental reasons - it is my first 'Mech, after all. :)

...edit: It's not so nice when you are able to deal 495 damage and NOT get any component breaks or kills. :<

Strangely enough - I started to enjoy my 8V much more than 9M. 14/12 SMRs + 3LL and you feel you have a punch. Frankly you still have that problem when at the end of battle you are way down on ammo and with one torso barely in place and some intact atlas just goes through you... happened twice this evening... but this is more an issue of a team play. Can't wait until I can get 8R and elite skills.
