I have been experimenting with several unusual builds for my mechs, specifically my Stalkers. I am curious as to what other "weird" builds people have tried and found to be much more effective than they expected them to be.

Stalker 3F:

300XL
2 PPCs
1 Large Laser
1 LRM 15 (2 tons ammo)
3 SSRM2s (2 tons ammo)
20 DHS

526 armor (max)

I have found this build to be quite effective. The PPCs have a nice punch and only firing 2 of them keeps heat manageable. The LL provides nice consistant damage and is easier to hit fast mechs with. The 3 SSRMs are nice for dealing with lights up close, and the LRM15 is a decent missle rack for range.

So, let's hear about your strangely effective builds, I find it quite refreshing to run mechs like this even if they are not "optimal"

I have a very specialist build for the CDA-3M, using a lot of 'stupid mechwarrior tricks' to make it work perfectly. I call it the 'Destroyer' role as you're most effective when you choose a target and focus them down, while sticking close enough to friendlies that you don't get overwhelmed. Begin the round scouting, come back to your group (maybe with a few tag a long enemy lights), reorganize and move out. Once the real fight starts, you pick on anyone who exposes themselves and either drive them off or kill them.

Cicada 3M

Endo Steel, Ferro Fibrous, DHS, XL255, ECM, 11 total heatsinks
UAC5 with 3 tons ammo,
4 medium lasers.

With the projectile speed buffs, and chain firing on both the 4 medium lasers and UAC5, I can effectively pump a UAC5 shot with every medium laser and have them both hit in most situations. This makes it ludicrously easy to time the AC fire to prevent jamming, while also pumping out impressive damage potential. Somewhat limited top speed and not 100% fully armored, but I have found it survives everything but being ganged up on by ECM using lights. Can easily pump 500+ damage a round, and for a scout/e-war mech that is not too shabby. Often end the map with armor left on all locations, which is pretty exceptional given the relative close range required.

Weapon groupings;
1 = UAC5, set to chain fire. Single click it don't hold it down unless you want to risk a jam.
2 = 4 medium lasers set to chain fire. my method is right click then left click, wait for the beam to end, repeat.
3 = 4 medium lasers, set to group fire. For when chain firing isn't applicable or if you run out of uac ammo.

Nothing quite like coring multiple heavy/assault with a 40 tonner.

Don't know about unusuall, but I loved my Catapracht 4x build:
2 gauss (60 ammo IIRC but not sure)
2 medium laser
1 ssrm2

XL255
Endo
Dhs
Max armor (expect legs)

There is no way to overheat this baby (ok you can, but you have to work for that) so I could play all game with all weapons blazing .. so fun to brawler with this ... noting beast the dual gauss kill shoot from 50 meters :P

Works like a charm dual gauss for everything , medium lasers and ssrm for chasing those pesky lights away,,,
