I've tried everything to get rid of the "dangerous compressed texture" errors that crash the game when first dropping, and show up in the Omnicron log (usually the Forest Colony skybox, one laser texture, and one PPC texture):

- replacing texture files
- totally clean install (including patcher cache)
- various detail settings in game
- various screen resolutions
- various driver settings
- various driver versions

Nothing was stable, until I tried the game in Windowed Mode.

3+ hours without a crash yesterday.

If I switch back to Full Screen or Full Window, crash.
If I switch to Full Screen afterwards via Alt+Enter, I sometimes crash, or the game locks up (I get some audio effects, but the display engine locks up completely).

Now, if anyone has a solution for changing the screen location of the window, that would be fabulous. Right now playing in a Window is rather annoying.

Frame rates are still down, especially on some maps, but at least I can usually do 150-300 damage with direct fire weapons (I was averaging 250-500 3 weeks ago).

Well, that worked great, until I decided I was stable enough to group up with folks again, then my first drop attempt crashed. I'm starting to suspect it is somehow a problem with grouping.

Agreed. I tried a small 2-man group on the weekend, and it created a bunch of issues I normally don't see PUGging.

- minimap / large map all black
- crashes to desktop
- yellow screen / loss of control

Yet when I PUG, which is nearly all the time, I can go for hours on end without a glitch. In fact I had never seen a yellow screen or black minimap until Saturday.

I second your opinion that launching with a group seems to cause certain problems.

Alright, as soon as I started posting this while dropping, it failed to work, but I did manage 6 grouped drops (2 with 8 players) without a crash, even full screen, with Mumble open, and even in an Atlas -- all the seemingly worst conditions for causing my CtDs. (3 drops were Forest Colony Snow, and I crashed on the 3rd one, with the lower drop point.)

My latest work-around? Extract the textures the game is having a problem with, using 7ZIP (or another compatible program)

extract forestcolony_clouddome_a.dds from C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Game\SkyBoxes_ig.pak
to C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Game\objects\environments\skyboxes

extract laser_beam_1x4_lop0.dds from C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Game\Textures.pak
to C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Game\textures\particles\weapons\

extract ppc_beam_b.dds from C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Game\Textures.pak
to C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Game\textures\particles\weapons\

I'd still see the errors in the Omnicron.log file, but it didn't crash the game, until that last one.

Still, if say 1 out of 10 is the best I can do, that's hurting my group pretty bad in the current 8v8s.

CTD when loading the map in an 8 man group. I get searching, black screen, and then bam CTD. It has started to happen every 3-4th match. I was in window mode the whole time. I even tried in full screen, CTD. I have a nvidia card 550ti with single threading turned on. To me, it appears there is glich when the client tries to load up the map and communicate with the server. It worked fine before this patch.

I played 8 drops with a group yesterday without a crash (and many without group).

Latest attempt to work-around the problem was to replace the forest colony skybox with another one.

I extracted rivercity_planet_spc.dds, renamed it to forestcolony_clouddome_a.dds, and placed it in C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online\Game\objects\environments\skyboxes

I'll keep ya posted as I test further.

Oh, and it *looks* bad (same size file, but doesn't align properly to the skybox), but if it keeps us from crashing, I'll suffer through a messed up skybox.

Just tried window mode. Thought it might be the fix after two successful drops without a CTD, but got the CTD on the third. Game remains unplayable. :/

First drop attempt today, River City, and CtD.
2 new textures it is complaining about:

============================ PrepareLevel rivercity ============================

[Error] Runaway thread

I've extracted those, and will report back after further testing.

Well so far I've only dropped in Forest Colony since, and after playing one 8v8 on the map successfully, the next one I got a CtD, same side of the map, too.

This time, I got it without the runaway thread error, which previously was always part of it.

============================ PrepareLevel forestcolony ============================
Initializing default materials...
[Error] Error: CTexMan::ImagePreprocessing: Scaling of 'objects/environments/skyboxes/forestcolony_clouddome_a.dds' compressed texture is dangerous (only single mip) [File=objects/environments/skyboxes/forestcolony_clouddome_a.dds]

[Error] Error: CTexMan::ImagePreprocessing: Scaling of 'textures/particles/weapons/ppc_beam_b.dds' compressed texture is dangerous (only single mip) [File=textures/particles/weapons/ppc_beam_b.dds]

So, I may have decreased my crashes, but it is still far too common when grouped.

Also, when I don't crash at launch, two or three times I've had the client freeze during Forest Colony mid-game. I continue to hear missile impacts for about a minute, but the game is otherwise completely unresponsive, with the display locked up, Alt+Enter won't even toggle between windows and full screen, and it doesn't come back (eventually I usually get killed in game, and the game ends, and I'm still frozen up in the game screen). That started the same time the CtDs began, in late Nov.

I don't think that the issues are related to grouping, I get CTDs when grouped and ungrouped, same with the yellow screen bug, FPS lowers (not the 4 FPS bug), FPS drops to 4 when facing the middle of the map, and the 4 FPS bug that happens every 3rd or 4th match.

This new CryEngine is garbage and IMO should be rolled back once PGI gets their test servers set up so that those of us who have paid for premium time, can actually play it to some degree of success.

Yep I am still crashing to desk-top (after finally overcoming the damn MD-5 Error to actually update the client and let me play...which cost me a week of premium time until I could sort the workaround).

I will try windowed mode and report back.

And yes - PGI have screwed the game with the recent patch, it is highly unstable!

Also having this same issue. Windowed mode seems to help but CTDs are random. Fresh install. Updated drivers (beta and current)

Core 2 Quad q6600
Nvidia GTX670 2GB
8GB DDR2

I'm running MWO on Win8x64 AMD Phenom 6 core 3,3 GHz, 8 GB Ram, Geforce 470GTX.

When I wanted to play today in the morning I got 10 CTDs in a row, so I started to look if I could find what causes the issue.

I checked the crashdump.dmp file, there I saw that the issues where caused by nvd3dum.dll.
As a result of my finding I uninstalled the graphic card drivers(newest stable), and replaced it with an older driver (302.82) additionally I unchecked any 3D vision option during the driver install.

After that my CTDs were (almost) gone, I only had one more CTD in about 15 games and when I checked the crashdump.dmp it was caused by some cryengine .dll.

At least this procedure helped for me, maybe it works for others too. If you want to downgrade your GFX card driver please keep in mind that you should deinstall your current driver before doing so in the system center(installed programs and device manager).

Maybe one more thing to mention, I play in windowed mode only, as I have the feeling that the game crashes much more often in fullscreen mode.

@ Krewjke:

You can see that there was a dump file created, and where it was created.
If you want to look into the dump file you need some kind of debugging tool, either you can use Visual Studio or a standalone version that you can find here:

Grouping may only exacerbate the problems, and not be a cause. I too have seen many of these problems with or without groups, but I do notice the increase in problems when grouped.
