As someone who has never read any of the novels and wants to start, where should I begin? I found a list of them in order of publication here:

http://en.wikipedia....ttleTech_novels

For background: I've played Mechwarrior 3 & 4, and Mechcommander 1 & 2 (and obviously MWO).

Start with the 1st one. Warrior Engarde trilogy, then the grey death legion books

The warrior trilogy is good. As is the blood of kerensky trilogy. Stay away from "far country" like the plague. Ignore the haters and read the MWDA novels when you get to that point - give the MWDA series a few books to get rolling. If you do wind up also reading the MWDA novels, stay away from any of the ones published by illsa j bick. She publishes true-crime sex obsessed filth and tries to pass it off as sci-fi.

Speaking of darkness, the clan novels are usually pretty dark; maybe not bad, but definitely on the dark side.

The majority of the novels are pretty good.

I followed this http://www.stargazer..._novel_list.htm

It sets them up in rough chronological order. Helps to colour all the characters as youre constantly seeing certain events from multiple angles.

Thank you for this! Been looking for something like it since high school years ago.

Definitely read the Blood of Kerensky and The Jade Phoenix trilogies. Test of Vengeance is really good, too.
