So when you buy the same mech with different variant does it still take up slots in your mech bay or does it stack em in the same mech bay? Thanks

Each variant will occupy it's own space. So if you have the standard 4 slots you can have 4 of the 5 HBK variants unlocked before you have to buy another slot for MC.
This usually means you have to sell any mech you don't really use after you unlock all the Basic and Elite perks with XP. Unless you are willing to spend the cash.
Personally wouldn't be a big deal for me if it weren't for the fact that when you buy a hero mech you also have to buy it a slot. Would be nice if they came with one.
Edited to add a whole bunch of words.

You need to unlock for each specific variant.

You need to unlock the "Basic" skills on 3 variants and can than unlock "Elite" and "Master" on any you want. You can even sell the redundant variants you will keep all unlocks if you ever purchase them again.
