As far as I know, the abilities of all the basic skills DOUBLE with elite. But when?
Do I have to...
- unlock elite (having three mechs of the same type with all basic skills unlocked), or
- complete all four elite skills for the doubled basics for that specific mech, or
- complete elite skills for all the three mechs of the same type?
to get these bonuses?

IIRC they will double when you have unlocked all the basic skills for 3 chassis.
This will be reflected by at large X2 on the left of the skills window.

Im glad topics like these exist. It'd be helpful to people who haven't bought their mechs with real cash to understand how far they have to go to be competitive.
Newbies just have to take their licks and be easy killings for tricked out 10 mil lights with elite skills all gathered.
it's basically like fighting vs Clanners already.

Do you mean 3 variants?
Yes you need to get 8/8 basic xp's on 3 different variants of a single frame (the HBK-4P, HBK-4SP, & HBK-4J for example) and then the four elite xp's will open up to be able to purchase, as well as instantly all 3 variant's 8 basic's will be doubled in effectiveness with a big 2X right next to them. It makes a HUGE difference, as does getting that speed tweak one from the elite xp which will add a straight 10% of your max kph, to your kph. So if you norm go 81, then once you get speed tweak from the elite xp you will go 89.1 instead.

So your basic bonuses are doubled when you get all basic unlocks of the same chasis? Do they double again when you unlock master?

Furthermore, once I get to elite level on a particular chassis, 3 or more of a particular variant, can I sell the ones I don't play to free up mech bays and retain the perks?

Regarding this, if you max out the basic bonuses for a chassis, then sell it, it will still show 8/8 bonuses, but all the bonuses will revert to their EXP cost instead of saying "learned" or whatever.

No, but you can unlock Master with any 3 Full-Elite mechs in the same weight class(light, med, heavy, assault).
