I was looking through a couple MWO wikis for weapon info and saw that a lot of them had a 'max range' listing that was usually much longer then the displayed range.

Does this mean that weapons can actually shot further then the shown range in the weapons listing when in the cockpit?

If they can, does that essentially mean the range shown is effective range (full damage at this range or lower) and max range still does damage but suffers fall off damage (less damage the further away they are, minimum damage at max range)?

they have reduced damage beyound their range in a linear fashion.

EX med laser. 270 range, max range 540.

0-270 does full damage, 271-540 the damage drops off linearly till its 0 at 540 (maybe 541, not sure on that last meter)

0-270m full damage
337.5m 75% damage
405m half damage
472.5m 25% damage
540(541) zero damage

Energy weapons have 2x the list range for their maximum, ballistic weapons have 3x the listed range before 0 dmg.

Range shown in game is the max range at which the weapon will do its full damage. Beyond that the damage decreases with range.

For energy weapons its 2x range till dropoff to 0. Aka a 450m large laser does full damage up to 450m, like 0.5 dmg at 850m and 0 at 900m.

For ballistics the max range is 3x . I dont know if their damage tapers down though.. probably does.

When your weapon color is green, it will do max damage. When it is yellow it will do reduced damage up to it's maximum range. When it is black it will do zero damage.

You won't do much damage at extended ranges, but lasers have infinite reloads, and every point of armor gone is gone for the rest of the match.

Of course, you ARE drawing a line directly back to your own position... tracers work both ways.

Just in case you haven't come across it yet:

Mouse over any of the categories for a tooltip explaining what it means. Click on any of the mech names to open it in the online mechlab (invaluable for getting a feel of a mech before you drop cbills on it). Will make your life a hundred times easier as a new player.
