Adding this [...] really makes you feel like the pilot instead of the mech...

I know that changing your FOV (field of view) has been posted/discussed before, but as this really
added immersion for me, I wanted to repost it in the Guides forum and maybe get it stickied.

Tired of this? "Am I a 'Mech? Or am I the pilot?"

Want this? "Oh, I'm in the cockpit! Cool!"

Here's how!
  • Go to your Mechwarrior Online folder, e.g. C:\Games\Piranha Games\Mechwarrior Online\
  • Open the file user.cfg* (empty by default) with Notepad
  • Add the line cl_fov = 79
  • BE THE 'MECH!
*If you don't have a user.cfg, create it, but make sure you have file extensions enabled in Windows, otherwise you will name it user.cfg.txt and it won't work.

Why '79' you ask? User 'von Pilsner' did the research:

Much more than that and I get (visual) clipping in fast mechs.

Now, look at that awesomely designed cockpit (Hula Girl not included with product)

Some things to take note of:
  • Zoom levels are unaffected by this
  • Press dot (.) to turn off cockpit lights
  • Game performance may decrease
I hope this helps some people!

Advanced only: If your computer screen has a different aspect ratio than 16:9, you can use an even higher setting than '79' (because MWO uses vertical FOV, which is dependent on aspect ratio). See this nifty little chart:

If you are unsure about your aspect ratio, or have a slow computer, stick with the suggested '79' value.

A Hunchback was hurt in the making of this post.

Excellent short and to the point guide wickwire. I've seen many pilots that did not know how to adjust FOV and this does help people a ton. I'm currently working on a guide video about what you can do in the user.cfg file to customize your experience and will be posting it on the forum when its finished. Stay classy MechWarrior

Just to add:

Screen resolution lets you get away with a lot. I had no issues running 80 degrees with 1680x1050, but got a horrible fisheye effect using 90 degrees. However, on a 1920x1080 resolution the 90 degree view feels comfortable with only a little stretching of images on the edges.

In any case, it is a quick file modification that I would recommend to anyone.

It has been suggested that the CryEngine's cl_fov value is vertical FOV rather than horizontal ('normal'). What you're saying would support that, as vertical FOV depends on screen resolution.

so I asked von Pilsner and he said he's using a resolution of 1804x1014 (LCD TV)

using the calculator that means that mechs start to clip at about 111 degrees horizontal FOV according to von Pilsner

if you put 111 in the calculator's "Desired horizontal FOV" field you can calculate the maximum vertical FOV setting for your resolution

so what would be the horizontal FOV for my screen (1920x1080) and the maximum vertical FOV ?

max horizontal (no clipping) is 111 degrees according to pilsner, so if i put that and your resolution into that calculator, it says you should use the 79 setting for vertical fov

*added a chart reflecting our newest findings regarding vertical fov, which is dependent on aspect ratio

Been using 80 at 1920x1200 since closed beta, might give 85 a whirl.

Always good to reiterate the field of view adjustment until the in game slider is added.

I just did this and I love seeing my Classy Urbanmech in its entirety now instead of just his cigar.

MWO: Edge of the seat excitement!
o:<
Me suppose the default pilot must have some sort of back problem which forces him/her to be hunched all the way forward.

Thanks guys! Worked like a charm. Love it ;) Takes some time getting used to after playing with standard settings, but since PGI did such a great job on the cockpits it helps with immersion. Again, love it :P

Yea. I don't get why they put so much work into the cockpit and then seat the pilot so much in front.

is it only in the light mechs that you can see more of the cockpit interior ?
cos I tested with 79 fov on assault and heavy and I hardly see one of my arms inside the cockpit.

your set FOV is the same for all mechs - the heavy cockpits are just more crammed

Cataphract cockpit is wide open, whereas the Jenner cockpit feels cramped with the FOV adjustments. Flipside, the Raven cockpit feels huge due to all the windows, but the Atlas cockpit is like looking through a straw. Pretty much everyone else is about equal.
