It's a hot topic like ECM used to be (thank goodness they decide to fix ECM months later). I think using the Elo system for match making should be optional. Most games have a ranked bracket and a non ranked system for match making. What's the difference?

Elo is supposed to generate fair matches. I see said fair matching about 10% of the time I play and 90% of the games aren't even close now. The last iteration of the match maker put forth close games at least 50% of the time because random gets it right over the long haul. If you are only playing a few games you might get stomped twice in a row but you might win the next 8 and never know if you quit in frustration.

In most other games Elo ranked matches are more serious and very competitive. You get people using cheesier tactics because winning is more important. Non ranked matches are relaxed because there is no downside to losing. You see people being more generous (even in a competitive environment) and less bloodthirsty. Sometimes they even play with something more fun but less competitive because it is fun.

I see Elo bringing out the cheese in just about every match you encounter. There's one best build for several mechs and you see it over and over and over. It's not fun. This is partially a problem of boating balance (not relevant to this thread) and partially a problem with Elo.

Be honest with the poll because no one can see the votes. After you vote please post a quick response (even if all you read is this first post) so topic stays where people can see it.

i have had more fun since the introduction of ELO than i have since i started playing. being matched up against competent players make its more fun more competitive i usually hover around the top 3 in a match but i put above average.

I do not want all my matches to be fair. its meant to be a simulation of what piloting a stompy during a war zone would be like. its not always going to be a fair fight i do miss that. getting rolled happens

ELO is needed makes it fair for all not just some

Most games even use ELO in "unranked mode", SC2 and league of legends both have an unranked mode but it still uses it. These games just allow people to play in a ranked mode where ELO (be it in a ladder or the raw number) is displayed and games are taken more serious. Both of these games also allow for player made custom match making too which does not used ELO but the lobby system.

If MWO could grow its player base it would benefit from these gamemode options:
  • Ranked matches that use ELO and display the ELO value to players. This is where you bring your best builds and play your best game. The matchmaker for these would also run on a much longer pairing process (upto 5 min) to gaurantee a close game. Keep in mind as you get higher in ELO it will take even longer. Some of the top players on league of legends (which has 10+ million players) takes 20 min at times.
  • Unranked which uses ELO but throws matches together quickly and is for new/less competitive players.
  • Custom games which just allow people to make their own match with their friends.
Right now we only have the unranked mode that is common in other multiplayer games. This is due to not enough players to support the ranked game mode. Custom games simply haven't been implemented yet. I can guarantee you one thing, that if you go back to the old pug stomp days you will never see the population of this game grow where it can better support a competitive ranked mode.

There are a lot of people who are getting the same match results as me (90% of games end with completely lopsided victories). Elo is NOT fair match making unless you can get 16 people in the game within about 50 points of each other. This game does not match like this (possibly due to population problems) when you play during off hours. It makes the game super not fun.
