There's an undue fear of XL engines.

Yes, you can be taken out rather abruptly in some circumstances (sneak attacks with dual heavy weapons to the back)

But if you're a decent player, most of the time, you'll torso twist and protect your weaker sides, spreading the damage out evenly. Much of the time, when your XL is blown up - it's through the CT, or where you're in such a condition that you wouldn't have lasted much longer anyway.

I'd say around 10-15% of the games I play, the XL engines I use in most of my mechs are more of a liability than they're worth. The other 85-90% of the time, they're great to have.
