Cataphract for me. I like my jets though, I still have 4 on my Catap, and they get me into and out of hot spots pretty well. I think they're worth it. That and my 4 ML/2 UAC-5s get me pretty good numbers.
Sorry to all who might want to claim their Stalker can Brawl.
No. They can't Brawl.
For a Stalker, you have to aim the whole whale at something and press fire. Against even a single decent light, medium, or heavy in close, you're dead. Stalkers are support mechs. They can be built for in close support, or long range support, but they can't brawl. Just because you're in close doesn't mean you're brawling. Brawling means you gotta maneuver. Beached whales can't maneuver.
I own two Stalkers, and I get good kills with them. I enjoy them for their own benefits (
OMG I can fit that many weapons on this whale??!!)
Atlas, well if you sit toe to toe with an Atlas in a Catap you're gonna die, even if he's taken damage there's a good chance you'll die, if you can maneuver about and take him in a side torso enough times, you can probably chop out enough guts to make it stop working however.
So my impression.
Cataphract. Best actual Brawler, can usually at least drive lights away, can outmaneuver Assaults, can outfirepower other heavies.
Atlas. Can outfirepower all but Stalker, can come close to matching that in some builds, tougher than hell, Not a good maneuverer, but better than the Stalker
Stalker. Beached whale. Can't Brawl. I've rescued some from lights playing with them like cat's on mice. Great firepower, so if you can get someone standing somewhere at close range will all those lasers and SRMs, you're gonna do some serious damage.
CAN NOT BRAWL!!!
