Honestly the name is work in progress and I don't care what it is called, but the idea of the game sounds fun to me.
Game mode: IFF Challenge
Team size: 2 teams (8 or 4 players each)
Conditions of Victory:
Destroy the other team.
Description:
The map is littered with various gun emplacements used to harass or intimidate people encroaching upon the territories.
However the previous owners of this land are nowhere to be found and a single capture point nearby allows you to gain control over the gun emplacements.
The guns are small in caliber (Small to medium lasers, machine guns, possibly SRM/2 launchers) but have armor to defend themselves.
Both teams have to deal with them in some way: either ignore them and concentrate on the enemy team, capture the point in which the IFF changes to see that team as friendly and use the guns to their advantage, or take time to destroy the gun emplacements which reduces the viability of the enemy to use them.
Possible advantages to this game type:
*With the guns and maps used for this mode, certain niche mechs like the Spider can be useful.
*Provides a new level of play for people instead of the standard Deathmatch (just add one in already please), Assault (what some people call Deathmatch in denial), or Capture (Deathmatch with more boxes to ignore).
*Provides a new unit into the game: Turrets/Gun emplacements! This could prove as a testing ground for such an item which could be used in future modes of play.
*Gives people who like to capture a reason to play a mode which suits their style.
*People who tend to shoot at the ground, possibly injuring their team mates, at the beginning of a match now can test their weapons on something useful.
*Turrets/Gun Emplacements allow newer players a chance to practice on a 'live fire' target and learn ranges.
*Coordination will be key, but Lone Wolf players can still help by removing certain Turrets/Gun Emplacements if they want.
Possible disadvantages to this game:
*This may cause some people to believe the idea that now you're forced to capture. Even though that's not necessarily true, capturing the IFF zone only helps you but isn't a pure requirement to winning.
*Turrets/Gun Emplacements could possibly "friendly fire" on someone while focused on the enemy target. Considering how this is possible with regular players this hazard isn't unique.
*Lone Wolf players who don't communicate might have difficulty enjoying some aspects of this game. However MWO is built with team play in mind.
*Someone will probably list a reason why they don't like this idea later, which will save me time thinking up new reasons.
Payment and Rewards:
The current pay-outs for wounding and killing enemy units should suffice, but if the turret gets the killing blow that would only give the other players kill assists.
However this game mode will also reward those who capture the IFF zone and make it a viable option in gameplay.
Rewards for XP or C-Bills (or both) for destroying Turrets/Gun Emplacements should be at least 25% of killing a Light Mech class.
The actual hard numbers I'll admit is a weakness of mine, but one focus should be rewarding people who want to attack and those who want to capture.
This way the game mode seperates itself from the majority of "Deathmatch" style games and promotes a fresh take on play.
Further Notes:
This would also be useful whenever community warfare comes along. Factions tend to raid bases in order to test their neighbor's strength militarily.
These IFF zones could belong to a former power (example: Fed Sun forces moving on a Confederation world) or just belong to 'bandit forces'.
