Wouldnt it be cool if there was a form of penalty for griefing?

One idea is maybe for every point of damage done to friendlies, increase the chance of something failing on your mech....

Sensors fail: no more minimap, or targeting info (ultimate ECM!)
Actuator/Servo fail: unable to move arms/torso twist.
Engine fail: Unable to power on.

Basically, make it so that if a player continually griefs, the game becomes unplayable to them.

Although, how to make it so it doesnt hurt the rest of the team... :)

What are your guys' thoughts?

Quite often teamkills happen accidentally. Like teamkiller is greedy and he shots through the allies to score a kill. Also sometimes the teamkilled person is to be blamed - crossing an AC20-k2's line of fire in a damaged mech is a BAD idea. I wouldn't actually punish situations like that by locking someone's engine (it seems to severe, also it's a handicap to the other team). Yet if someone purposely kills allies (just to troll the match), then yes I think he should be punished. Therefore I think few seconds weapon lock would (that might get longer if you keep shooting allies) be the most suitable punishment for griefers/accidental griefers.

Somehow I read this as "something faLLing on your mech...." and had a mental image of a huge refrigerator with "acme" written on the side of it... :)

Accidentally shooting a team mate is not griefing.

If they did institute a penalty you might be surprised how many times you have done it yourself and not realized it.

Friendly fire happens. Get used to it. What we need is an in-game method of reporting players who do it intentionally. As a former Jenner piliot, I knew full well that I was going to take friendly fire as I was circling an enemy, pelting him with lasers and streaks. I never cried or bitched or complained when I took a friendly shot. That's due to MY playstyle and MY actions keeping mobile as a light. That's what lights are supposed to do and they're much more effective at doing that than worrying about when and where you're going to shoot your weapons.

you have to be pretty damn stupid if you honestly think adding a massive penalty to every point of friendly fire is anything but the worst idea ever proposed on this forum.

I read that as "...falling on your mech".

I immediately imagined a comically large anvil, or perhaps a piano. The piano of course is normal sized. It just kinda smashes and bounces off, causing the the pilot to wonder what the hell just happened and why there are pieces of wood on his windshield.

Christ, really? Do you have to be that rude and insulting?

The op was referring to griefers, not accidental friendly fire.

In my experiences, griefing tends to happen most often right after the drop. It is immensely frustrating when someone intentionally legs you or damages you for no reason.

I too wish there was an in-game way to report ff, but I also like the idea of punishing players who immediately fire upon team members before even leaving the spawn. I wouldn't mind seeing mirror damage done to friendly mechs for a given time, or having the drop zone be a no-damage area for a limited amount of time.

Yes, in a heated battle ff happens. Unfortunately there is no way to punish a troll for setting you or your team back before ever engaging with the enemy.

altough i avoid as much as i can to hit my allies, I also try not to put myself in others way ...but often others cross my path driven by the frenzy kills...so an 35 alpha sometimes makes a lot of damage.

you need some skills to know where to position yourself and where to go from there in middle of the battle so you wont mess with others line of fire...skill that not many understand. ;)

Stepping in front of enemy fire intentionally to penalize them is the best form of griefing because they cant report it, since they will look like tkers.

griefing or just plain old ff?

title seems to me to refer to chat but post is more about ff.

i personally dont want to see any penalty for FF damage or tk while the match is in progress because its bound to happen. i would like to see FF damage taken or dealt in end game stats.

Same, except I imagined a 16 ton weight being dropped, probably wouldnt make that much difference to an assualt mech though.
Also, if anyone gets the reference, your one glorious mechwarrior.
