The comic is detailing basics of gameplay, for new people. It is stating 'friendly fire is on', not arguing a subtle point against a difficult to grasp combat mechanic caused by netcode rather than design.

I haven't seen missles deflected by a lag shield yet though.

It would be possible to miss with regular SRM's or unlocked LRMs due to lag shield. That isn't what they're saying though. They're saying 'dont run around in front of your friendlies between them and the enemy' like the diagram shows.

The Penney Arcade training manual warns users that your Mech is capable of absorbing the shots and missiles fired by your own team (standing directly in front of an enemy can cause your own team's LRMs to impact you). They are not talking about the effects of Lag or Server/Client sync. This thread is complete... however, I'll move it to Off Topic instead of closing it in case anyone wants to add anything else.
