you can try to directly bind to the mouse in the options menu in MwO, or if the mouse has a program that lets you map keys map the buttons to. . say. . the number pad 1 through 9 and then map the number pad to MwO in options.

That's all I can think of, outside replacing the mouse with something. . . else. . . . >.>

Look here. Remember, it is just another way to control your keyboard. Keep that in mind.
Strategic Engine may be your best option

I can get the Engine to run and recognize the device. I can open up Notepad and press buttons on the SC and the button presses are displayed as if the keyboard was pressed so the Engine is doing its job... but in MWO, nothing is recognized.

Anyone have advice as to how to make it work?

The MS SC is like a really odd mouse

Did you go into the options section of the MW:O game launcher (Menu/Options) and push buttons to try and get them to take, maybe in the "alt key map" section (the middle section)? That's kinda what I did. Double-Click the feature you want and press the button on the MS SC that you KNOW is the right key for that function (as you assigned it).

And I bought my Nostromo n52 gamepad before I bought an MS Strategic Commander (I liked the former and discarded the latter). The software maps the n52 just a KB.

Does the MS SC come with any software itself?

Its no longer supported by MS, but there is a 3rd party 'Strategy Engine 1.3' program which you assign keys to and it runs in the background.

I have the keys mapped to basic keyboard presses (pushing up on the SC is 'w', down 's', etc and the main buttons map to '1', '2', '3', for firing groups, etc). I tried the assigning in the MWO settings and nothing took - pressing the buttons does nothing. I'm wondering if the 3rd party software emulates the keyboard presses in a way MWO doesn't like...? Or is there some sort of user config xml that needs updates?

That's really kinda odd, I had purchased the n52 about a year before I bought the MS SC and I still use the n52 with no mapping issues. Since your device is probably USB1, (yes?) could you be plugging it into a USB3 port?

I can confirm that the logitech gaming software also suffers with MWO. Dropped USB codes resulting in stuck keys sometimes. I suspect MWO is being temperamental in your case as well. I principally map my current Warthog HOTAS directly, and even then there seem to be firing delays - I have yet to determine if it is the buttons on the Warthog as they are quite stiff. These delays are not related to the bomb bay doors opening btw. Laser only
