I'm brand new to Mechwarrior, where do I learn the lore?

It seems like such an immersive world, where should I start?

I love robots and mechwarrior seems to take a realistic approach, which I like. I can't stand the ***-mode overpowered robots of many Japanese series (old, old Gundam Zaku vs Mass Produced federation units were ok, but once they got overpowered then it lost it's appeal for me) and american lore (horrid power rangers type stuff, etc).

Good luck to you Flutter, battletech lore is one of the largest IMO.

You do what anyone else does when they become interested in a series with a deep lore, dive in and don't rise for air until it makes sense. Its how I got through Metal Gear Solid.

You might also want to take a look at this webpage: http://bg.battletech.com/?page_id=400
As you might notice, it's part of the official website to the BattleTech board game which ultimately
spawned Mechwarrior Online.

Besides: welcome aboard!

I'd also suggest read a couple of the novels if you can find the at your local library. My favorites were really anything written by Michael A Stackpole

Awesome! Time to get reading! Thanks guys!

Of all the old games to play, I got a copy of Mechcommander (original). Which of the Simulator ones would be best to tackle? MW4?

MW4 has been heavily supported but MW3 had that sim like feel people really enjoyed but does not react well with modern operating systems.I suggest you go download MW4,patch it, and have fun.

Snag a Compendium. The complete set of rules for the tabletop game. Even if you never play it, it provides tons of interesting reading, a good grasp of the classic rules that our fantasy land is based on, and lil' snippets of history and fiction and fluff.

And if you are interested in what a given mech or unit would look like, you really should check out http://camospecs.com/ there are some truly excellent painters there; and they have some truly exceptional work on display. you can search for a given mech via the 'mini list', and the 'gallery' breaks things down by faction, and unit.

Fo' shizzle. The core rulebook and maybe a 3025 or 3050 tech readout are great!

If you are looking to get into the lore there are a large number of novels to read. I agree with Samson, Stackpole was my favorite author. I would recommend starting with the warrior trilogy.

Read Stackpole only if you want to read more about the Fedrats. The Core Rulebook or you can go to sarna.net I believe will help you out as well. or just go to www.classicbattletech.com as well. The game itself has been around for 25 years except for the MW stuff which has probably been less than 20 years and correct me if I am wrong on that.
