There is actually a canonical basis for the duration of planetary sized engagements that is based on the ellipsed drop point of each star system. There is also talk about alternative "rogue" drop points.

A planetary engagement (mult map large scale attack/defense) can be limited by HOW LONG the drop point is available for a single jump across House boundaries.

This could be the measure that the game developers use to scale a House on House with additional PDF/Merc unit large scale planetary multi map attack/defense engagement.

In other words, say the drop point is only available for 7 days. That means the two House units have 7 days to conduct attack/defense/counter attack map drops across multiple map sets for the possible capture and control of a planet. Once the 7 days is over either the Attacking house controls all the mapsets or is forced off the planet by the defending house.

Additionally multi jump or rogue drop points can be used canonically to allow small unit raids on a House.
