Unless they have been living under the proverbial rock, Im pretty sure the developers are aware of Kickstarter and how it is a chance to revive ignored and forgotten IPs and games.
Although I like MWO, for me Mechwarrior has always been more of a personal experience. Some of the games in the past are all time favorites and brilliant games all to themselves.
PGI should Kickstart a Single Player Campaign for MWO or even a standalone game, I sure as hell would back it, would any of you?

They have way too much on their plates already. I would wait until they have a majority of what they want out there first, such as a much better netcode, optimized engine, more mechs, maps, and modes.
Afterwords I would go with the Kickstarter or another "founders" program seeing as how successful that was with even how the game is at it's current state.

As you may have noticed, they have a tag saying: We're Hiring!
I don't think the primary problem is financing, I think it's both getting the necessary talent and cleanly integrating their efforts.
For those of you who have never worked in software: adding more people can actually slow a project down in the short run. It's counter-intuitive but there are a lot of tasks necessary to get new people up and running while ensuring that the changes they make don't break other people's work.
