so another couple easy questions...
1.) Can I rename and reorder my mechs, say Im working on atlas's rght now have 2 of em but decide I wanna buy a cata for my 3rd.... then an atlas again... can I group my atlas's up or will they forever be in the order I purchase them. Also can I rename my mechs after I purchase them, or only at time of purchase
2.) AC/2 I see it has ultra long range but do they really do enough damage to justify them in your opinions? Im trying to decide which long range projectile is the harassing ones and which ones drop even atlas's armor fast
thanks again

1. They're working on it as a part of UI 2.0
2. I've seen some devastating 4x AC/2 builds. That said, I don't use ballistics much, myself.

In the order you purchase, cannot be renamed.
TIP: When you get a lot of mechs, you can click and drag them left to right instead of using the arrows. Re-organization will come (as the above poster mentioned) in the 2.0 UI overhaul. Sometime in Feb. See: http://mwomercs.com/...e-improvements/

I like it on my 4X raven to intimidate ridge huggers, pushes em back into their hole. It's good for grabbing attention I find to pull enemies away from my teammates, or lure them into the mass of guys.

1) To my knowledge can't rename and I am 100% sure you can't rearrange yet. hope they add it because I want to keep my mech bay grouped and organized.
2) AC 2 does light damage but has a very far range and it's rate of fire is fast so if you have good aim it can have sustainable damage. Put 2 into a weapon group and link fire them and you practically have nonstop fire. If you can hold aim they can strip armor quickly.
However if you are looking for a single shot solid punch the guass rifle or PPC is the way to go. Gauss are glass cannons which will explode more times than not once the armor is gone on their section (usually taking out the RT/RA). The PPCs have high heat per shot and a minimum range. ERPPCs don't have the min range, but have higher heat.

The AC2 has a great rate of fire leading to reasonable DPS (damage per second) on par with other larger ballistic weapons. However this means you have to land many small shots on the mech (or as specific mech section) instead of a single slug that deals all it's damage to one location. You need to stay in the line of fire and sustain those AC2 rounds downrange to see effective damage.
It certainly has potential for a variety of roles: sustained fire, long range support, suppressive fire, but is a bit lacking in killing power and you can't pop from cover, fire, return to cover, repeat.

AC2 need to be stacked 3 to 4 for it to be meaningful, otherwise I would save the tonnage and just go with ERPPC for long range firing.

The ac/2 is one of the highest dps weapons in the game. You just have to hit in the same place every time.

Ok notes on the Ac/2, first everything everyone has already said is true.... however it is a "sustained damage weapon" which mean you have to sustain fire to do damage, redundant i know, but this also means in a 4xAC/2 arrangement to get max DPS you have to expose your whole (or at least the top half) 'mech to fire for extended periods of time.
Now i won't say the 4xAc/2 builds don't work, they do, I'm just pointing out an issue you might have. Especially since anything that can pull it off (cataphract) has a front like the broad side of a barn. Some changes i have found that work are 2XAc/2 + 2X(U)AC/5. Bit more of a punch still good long range.

I find it very difficult to hit anything with the AC/2, I was hoping it would make my RVN-4X viable since the MGs don't seem to be more than an irritant to enemy players. I consistently miss or appear to miss, the sound and visual feedback on a hit gets lost in battle. If a mech is sitting still however you can ruin it quickly with AC/2s but that's rarely the case unless you enjoy popping discos...

One AC/2 is just an annoyance, for the most part. Maybe combined with an ER Large Laser or ER PPC it can be uses as your single Ballistic slot, but really, I think the tonnage would be better spent on more Heat Sinks to fire the ER PPC's more
2+ AC/2's can be more than viable, but you have to kind of know how to compensate for ballistic convergence and such to truly shine with them.
If you can aim ballistics, do yourself a favor and try the 4x AC/2 Cataphract 4X - loads of fun
