Right, I know this has been said many many times already (been lurking the forums for a while now) but I thought I'd post just so the devs know that some people are still getting annoyed:
- The blur effect: Great, love it!
- The dimming: Yes, great, good stuff
- The shaking: Alright yep, would expect that
- The "camera" effects: OK, makes sense, good
- The smoke and particles when I'm being hit / hitting someone
- The gloomy (not just night but daytime too) atmospheric maps
- The dark colour palette
All great stuff, but when its all going on at once I CANNOT SEE A FREAKING THING
INB4 "You need to stay in better cover!!!!!" I get this ALL THE TIME at close to mid range, when fighting one or more mechs. This happens to me on every single map, almost every time there is a small - medium sized firefight. I like the effects, but any chance they could be turned down a bit? Or could we have more sophisticated targeting than the triangle and square? Perhaps an outline around the mech showing which parts are exposed from cover?
I love this game and I've been playing since MW2, and will continue so this isn't a throw all my toys out thread, but jesus guys, unless I'm picking someone off, I spend most of my time in combat firing at a red box because I literally cannot see anything else.
It's bearable until I get in a fight involving 2+ enemies (or 1 heavily armed enemy) firing on me within 200-300m, as soon as that happens I'm completely blinded, if I move out of cover and meet someone point blank range, I'm usually instantly blinded (meaning the only way I can back out is by watching the mini map carefully because I can't tell if I'm moving or not)
I realise that this is part of the mechanics and adds an interesting feel to it, but please for the love of god, these effects have to be turned down, or we need a clearer HUD so that at least I can fight back rather than just ending up in a situation where I am spending literally 20 seconds at a time navigating by the minimap and firing at a red box not knowing what's going on because I CANT SEE ANYTHING!!!!!!!

I Still Cant See!

Ive been noticing how dark the game is too. and it seems to detract from the colours, etc. this seems a lot worse on low than high settings however.

I'd really love a tropical island map, or a rolling hills covered in flowers map, or a painted desert style map, where the rocks are vivid oranges and reds, and the sky a brilliant cerulean.

I frequently end up looking at screens like this:
As you can see, I'm not taking damage, and only fighting one enemy, but I cannot see a damn thing. Screen stayed like this for well over 10 seconds

The picture posted is of a night map, hence you either need night vision [n key on your keyboard] or heat vision [h key on your keyboard] in order to accurately see.
This should clean up a lot of your problems. . at least on this particular map.

Yeah, that's a picture of river city day, not night. I get the same bug, getting hit at close range often turns my vision (not HUD, just visuals) almost pitch black for four or five seconds. I think it has something to do with the HDR settings.

I get that a lot on Forest Colony as well, it's driving me nuts. Especially when there's ECM around so you don't see target boxes.

try a custom user.cfg combined with the patched sys_spec files to get it working.
search forums for user.cfg, the first thread popping up has instructions and some user.cfg´s to start with and the zip with patched files.
when your at it you can disable the film grain to get rid of all kinds of fog but i think this maybe got disabled some patches ago.

Huh, I guess I've not noticed this problem. Is your system a bit dated? I know mine isn't top pf the line by any strech but it seems to keep up usually. I'm not gonna say suck it up and upgrade but you might consider it when you can afford it.
BUT until either that happens or the effects get toned down You could do a couple things.
1) Turn heat vision on for a a little bit just to get your bearings. Really helps to see through smoke or snow effects on frozen city. Then turn it off so you can actually see again. I hate running it continuiously.
2) When you fire at the red box, watch the paper doll on your target, in the upper right. The parts you actually hit flash a little bit. If you are missing the part you want to hit, then adjust a little bit and try again.
I'm not saying you're wrong here but there are a few tools to mitigate the effects.

The worst for me is frozen city, everything is just a murky grey whitewash, it looks crap.
