Right now 8-men are, in my experience, assault slugfests with maybe 1 or 2 lights thrown into the mix so they can explore a bit. The majority of players who can pack an Atlas are doing so, because there is little incentive to use anything else besides an assault from a pure mechanical standpoint. I think this is detrimental to the game, as I enjoy more diversified forces much more. They allow you to use mediums to skirt the melee looking for the enemy missile boats and the backs of heavier mechs, and to wolfpack an Atlas that gets out of position and isolated.
The easiest way I can think of implementing a fair system that encourages diversity is to give the option of choosing a weight limit for the drop. If you are worried about splitting a small playerbase, make just two tiers: a no weight limit option for those that want to pack the heaviest lance that has ever happened and a 500 tons combined weight drop limit. That’s enough for a 2/2/2/2 lance with some wiggle room for other builds.
Besides increasing the variety of weight classes in a match, this will also increase the variety of mech types between the classes,
Ideas?

Good idea! There should also be limits to mech classes to prevent 8 ECM-Raven -teams.

Im deffinitely for the 500 or even 550 ton drop weight limit for full premades. It gets annoying to run up aginast teams consiting of 5 or 6 Atlaii with 2 or 3 Ravens thrown in to react and scout.
The premade drops have all but died out for most nights, because players are getting sick of these joke teams. Finding matches takes ages if at all. There were nights Ive been playign during the prime time 8-10 PM local time where you would think that meeting up with other teams should be easy... but after 8 or 9 "Failed to find match" notifications we split up into 2 Lances and Pugged for the rest of the evening... This is not what should have happened with the Matchmaker phase... but ECM overdominance has caused it.
