Maybe try using the ingame Team (text) chat to coordinate with them better..??
.
Also, what Mech do you pilot, because I can tell you, everyone likes to "FOLLOW" the Assaults, and disregard what the Light Mechs do or say, unless they are spotting.

In all Online Games, you either find a group to play with that has competent and/or like-minded players, or you spin the roulette wheel of the PUG and hope for the best.
Sometimes, you get a group that knows what they are doing. Other times, you get the guy(s) who for whatever reason just can't or won't truly work with the team.

To pug, or not to pug, that is the question:
Whether 'tis Nobler in the cockpit to suffer
The Slings and Arrows of outrageous ECM,
Or to take Arms against a Sea of trial mechs,
And by opposing end them: to die, to sleep
No more; and by a sleep, to say we end
The Pug-ache, and the thousand Natural shocks
That Pilot is heir to?

Remember: You can lead a horse to water but i'll be damned if I can figure out how to get it to fire a PPC.

Anyway there are TS servers that pick up players to fill groups of 4.
Make friends, join a group, join a team and enjoy the fruits of some team work.
Oh, and I feel ya pain. Good luck.

Remember... Closing to melee is not always the answer. There are mechs who don't want to be in close (LRM-boats, etc). There is the question of how to focus fire and whether or not you have to go through a nasty kill-zone to close. Rushing without talking to your team is *never* the answer since it means spreading out and closing to the enemy at the same time which just allows them (even provokes even the bad teams) to concentrate fire on the mech in the front putting you at a disadvantage.
Find a group of pilots you like and get together in a clan. Suggest tactics through in-game chat. Watch your allies and actually stay close and support one another from cover. Lots of possible solutions have been suggested here.
There's no way for you to get pounded from range unless you're standing in the open or they have a spotter lighting you up in which case you can kill said spotter without leaving cover (if he can see you then you can see him) and with focused fire which should be your ideal in the first place.

Overall pugging is not for the faint of heart. If you have a fragile ego hop onthe TS server find a 4 Man and face roll. Though not as interesting it is a crap load less frustrating.

I know some very, very good pilots.
Ive also seen some players that can literally not hit a damn thing. Sometimes they survive the whole match or die last and accumulate less than 50 damage.

This game now is like a boxing match, where one side is allowed to bring in swords, while the other side may have never thrown a punch before. The lack of balancing is almost mind numbingly stupid on PGI's behalf.
