I just like to discuss some observation I made about Missile Guidance and how I feel about it.
The Missile flight behavior feels like 70´s. (Well I like the 70´s, although I prefer the 80´s to them.)
Especially End Term Guidance looks like they are trying to follow the target. They do not try to
predict the targets movement path and most of the time hit moving targets from the back.
In combination with the missiles beeing slow (really slow, a fast light mech can run away for
about 0.5 s.) they almost fly horitontally in End Term Phase. That looks weird.
I would not speed up missiles. The speed in traveling phase feels good. It looks like unguided
ballistic missles, but you can see them coming and you have the opportunity to act.
Well most oft he time it´s duck an cover, but ECM, a nearby AMS mech or something else may
be avaible. It´s a very nice element of gameplay to search cover. I would not want to loose this.
But in open field it feels wrong.
Second point is about the start of the Guidance Phase. The missile fly ballistic for about 2/3 of
the time and start guidance very late and they start very sudden. It looks like thy are falling
down and suddenly decide to follow the target. This would be suitable for an passiv seeker.
Just start them an let them look what they find. I would like to see this second firing mode,
but I gues it will result in LRM spamming.
So what´s the conclusion? I see two possible improvents. (I hope you find more.)
A better flight path for the missile. I suggest an easy prediction model.
Position of target plus FULL movement vector for early guidance (about 200m+)
Position of target plus HALF movement vector for late guidance (less than 200m)
Start of the guidance phase as soon as the missiles are passing apogee. (Yes, the are not flying
ballistic but the look like, call it highest point of flight, if you like)
What will this change!?
Better flight behavior in open field.
You can lead a missile into cover. Standing still and you are screwed, move and it will be easier
than it is now.
What are your thoughts about this? I would like to discuss about it.
