A few months back I asked Garth in the NGNG podcast about stats. Things like:
Most / least popular mech (Least is apparently the Cicada, FYI). Most popular weapon (If possible). Most common ways to die. Other interesting things that stats nerds might like to grok.
Garth's answer was effectively "[I'd really like more information like that. I'll ask]". Now there's lots of things going on. Everyone's busy. I'd rather they work on issues in the game than spend time gathering metrics to answer community questions. A caviat there that, they are gathering these stats already so I don't believe releasing them would take that much more work, but then I don't necessarily understand the amount of work to format the stats to fit whatever the narrative is.
It is also possible that, like total player numbers which they won't release, somehow these stats are seen as commercially sensitive.
Now I'm a trust but verify kinda guy myself. The problem is, no verification is possible if the information isn't provided to verify. Recent comments on ECM are "[Our data isn't showing us the 5 D-DCs and 3 RVN-3Ls problem. The average ECM per 8-man match is 4*]". Median != average, so I'd be curious which was meant, but we can't see.
So. What stats can we gather ourselves (With minimal effort and maximum return)? Tolkien's ECM stats analysis got me thinking, "What can we analyse in the absence of official stats?".
Process:
[Pre-game]
1) Record time in GMT.
2) Record if you are in a 1-4 man PUG or 8v8.
3) Record number of "Failed to find matches" in a row.
[In-game]
4) What map are you on?
5) Are you playing Conquest or Assault?
6) A status screen [Tab] at the start showing everyone's ping.
7) If anyone can think of quick/easy/valuable in-game stats to gather, LMK. Of potential interest are disconnects before and during game.
[Post-game]
8) Record the post-match result screen for analysis, including:
A - # of winners / losers kills / deaths.
B - Just how often are you coming up against the same people
C - IMHO ECM information would be nice (Like Tolkien's analysis), but is not necessarily easy to gather.
Please advise if you can think of any other valuable stats which can quickly, easily and uniformly be gathered.
