Why Does Everyone Have Such Bad Ping?

I'd say 90% of the matches I've played have been against 200-400 ping players, with maybe 10% of the players having under that, and 5% having reasonable (10-50) ping.
Why so?

There are probably a lot of (loser) players who are manipulating their bandwidth to Win. These guys are real winners, I'm sure they are proud of themselves.
I doubt the latter is "an epidemic" but is probably more common than we think. I know I tested running a Commando with and without downloads going in the background, and it did seem to have an effect, though I'm sure my testing method is a pale comparison to any true "ping throttling" or whatever that might be used as a cheat.

I am in Germany, before ECM Patch i had solid 120-130ms Ping. Day and Night.
After ECM introduction the Ping went up to 140-150ms Nighttimes.
Now it is again 120-130ms Nighttimes.
So they did something for the netcode, but not the BIG hurray.

Ive noticed the high pings too and its much much more common now then I remember. I routinely see groups of players with pings over 300.

Myself and many others are playing from Australia, we still have to use kangaroos to deliver network packets.
Eagerly awaiting servers and I'm also feeling somewhat guilty for disadvantaging my team (because I don't play a Raven).
Today I saw a hunchbank warping around and he had a ping just over 100. Pretty sure it was intentional...

Maybe today it was even more extreme because of the patch, but I just don't know what to do about it any more. Hitting lights has become an impossibility for me since a while now, so I just try to ignore them or not go against a light 1 vs 1 (which obviously is unavoidable sometimes because immediately the lights notice I can barely hit them).

Is it common to be hitting a Cataphract in the torso four or five times with an AC20 before being killed by said Cataphract by nothing but medium lasers?
This guy had like 600 ping (Is the SS button PrtScrn?), and kept talking in Portuguese.
If the BRs move here, I'm out instantly. That's all I need to say.

My ping is around 130-150ms and pretty steady, playing from northern Europe. Used to these pings as Aces High II has servers in Texas and ping was around 170ms and fully playable. Can't help the distance to MWO server..
