Eisen, you've got AMS ammo without case in a torso with an XL engine, that's just asking to blow up. Put it in the leg.

The case is there for the ams and streak, so I'm guessing he knew what you just said. I'd also guess he hasnt gone for double because he hasn't yet got the cash for it.

Definitely very fond of it. Works really well. Do note for yours that Endo-Steel is much much superior to Ferro-Fibrous. Both cost the same number of crit slots, but Endo Steel will net you a couple more tons of space than Ferro Fibrous will. Also, assuming you have the cash for it, definitely go to double heat sinks, especially if you bump up the size of the engine to 250 or 255, so you don't have to carry any extra heat sinks at all.

Just a thought, though.... would it be slightly more helpful to pad the crit spaces in the Gauss arms with some of the Gauss Ammo?
Since it won't explode it might take a hit or two that would normally hit the Gauss Rifle.
I don't think it would make a HUGE difference, but every little bit helps with those fragile things.

Check this Gausspult
2 mediums and ssrm2 will help you to fight lights, and'll keep heavier mechs busy while gausses are on cooldown.
70 Gauss round are plenty enough to not afraid to shoot anytime you wish, without a need to save ammo.

First, place ammunitions within the gauss in the arms; this because it may remotely happen that once the armor on your arm is gone, a crit may hit the ammo slot rather then the gauss (the probability is very low, but it's better than leaving only the gauss crits there). Gauss ammo doesn't explode, the gauss itself does.
Second, ditch FF and replace it with ENDO. ALWAYS. Endo allows much more weight savings than FF so you can load up more ammo or use a larger engine for better mobility and mech turn and twist speed. Use FF only if you can add it to ENDO, but this happens on lights mostly, sometimes medium mechs or Dragons with STD engines.
Third: case+XL engine is redundant; if they crit your ammo pack it means you're going to explode anyway since your side torso is already near to be gone, so place ammunitions in the legs.
Fourth, going with DHS allows you to add a couple of mlasers and endo to add 1 more ton of ammo. I'd ditch AMS and its ammo for 1 extra ammo of Gauss (I run Ilya and Gausspults with 7 tons usually) and place the remaining half ton to get 43 points of armor for the legs.
If you need to save up money this is what you can do by only ugrading to endo:

Runs a bit hot, but since Mlasers should be used for short range defense, the heat output should be manageable, since whenever you heat up you can rely on the dual gauss and the SSRM.

I think it would be a good idea.
If he didn't use an XL Engine, CASE could be interesting - it also stops ammo or gauss explosions from the arms, so if you're unlucky and the Gauss explosion would kill your arm, the damage transfers to the side torso, destroys the side torso, and then goes to your center torso, the CASE would stop the last step. For Gauss it's probably not that important, it's "only" 20 damage.

Switched ferro-fibrous armor to endo-steel to save more weight, and upgraded to double heat sinks. I have a rule of thumb against XL engines in Cataphracts, so I switched to the standard version. Streak missiles were removed and replaced with more reliable medium lasers. AMS was removed to save weight (I find ducking behind cover to be much more effective), and CASE was removed entirely since there's no longer a purpose for it.

Why are you using FF on these and not endo steel? You're short changing yourself a couple tons for no reason...
