Hi guys,

I have been playing MWO since October, but I just started using a CH fighterstick HOTAS setup for more fun, and need some advice because right now I am terrible with it!

It is so hard to adjust the sensitivity and gain to a comfortable level (or maybe I just suck with joystick). I am not the best at very rapid "twitch" placement of the mouse to a precise location, but with a med-low sensitivity mouse I can be fairly accurate. Do you all have any tips for using the joystick, and/or for good levels of sensitivity/gain to put in the CFG files?

Any advice would be appreciated, or should I just crawl back to the KB/mouse? Thanks!

I would wait for proper support for joysticks, currently its just there but not really optimized as it should be (I too am waiting to be able to use my CH HOTAS setup)

your x axis is just acting digital so if you use it for turning your mech it will always be 0 or 1 turning or no turning. no sensitivity in that.

Y and z axis as well as throttle work analogue. once you have practice with the crappy x axis behavior, it is not that bad....

but could be much much better with an analogue x axis of course!

The CH Control Manager allows you to designate your joystick as Mouse rather than CM Device X. I suggest you do that and set the sensitivity to something between 40-65 and see what that does for you. The game will recognize it as a mouse and require no configuration in the controls menu. The primary problem with this is the centered nature of the stick, you will use the stick for aiming and torso orientation simultaneously. To orient the torso you will input the necessary left/right movement then you need to return the stick to the centered position (the torso does not return to center with the joystick) and articulate with smaller movements for your aiming.
Sorry if this was not clear - feel free to PM me if you want to discuss more details.

Thanks for the advice guys. BlackBeltJones, I took your advice and labelled the x-y axes as mouse, and decreased the sensitivity. While I can tell I stil have to adjust to using full HOTAS with pedal turning (still having trouble keeping track of my leg orientation with the pedals), I can now aim decently enough to play effectively. It's so much more awesome than using mouse/kb! Thanks again for your help!

Awesome news. I know its not perfect but I love seeing people stick to joysticks regardless of the current viability. I recently added CH Pro Pedals to my rig and it does take some time to adjust. We HOTAS fans need to stick together and share experiences as much as possible. Im always available to discuss control issues.

Best bet until real support is in is to use one of the emulator programs to turn your stick outputs into mouse inputs. This puts sensitivity adjustment into your own hands, without messing with .xml and minimal messing with .cfg and leads to a shorter path to a dialed in setup. I went the hard route, and made my own stick for mech piloting, which has a special gimbal (pitch/azimuth) and uses absolute inputs (like a mouse). In game, I use TARGET, Thrustmaster's emulator for a few of their sticks (got MWO scripts for those BTW...).

You add or edit the User.cfg file in your MechWarrior Online folder located here C:\Games\Piranha Games\MechWarrior Online

It's important to know that in the User.cfg, setting the Gain higher increases the Mechs twist/pitch speed from full swings of the Joystick axii. Increasing the Sensitivity setting will make the small Joystick movements respond slower and more accurately. Takes a bit of fiddling, but you get a responsive Mech in the end. Right now I have my Sensitivity set very high from the default and I am liking the control it gives to twist and pitch

To get it working well in MWO takes some study and adjusting and practice, but over the course of a few days you get things set right.

My current User.cfg file:

cl_joystick_gain = 7
cl_joystick_sensitivity = 2.7
cl_joystick_throttle_range = 0
cl_joystick_invert_throttle = 0
cl_joystick_invert_pitch = 0
cl_joystick_invert_yaw = 0
cl_joystick_invert_turn = 0
I_joystick_deadzone = 0.077
I_joystick_buffered = 0

This is dependent on your other Joystick settings, like profiler settings, so most likely you will want to adjust it to fit your stick.

Only other thing I have run across is MWO's Digital Turn is so snappy you need to make the Deadzone a little larger than you would in other games. MWO's axii are all independent of each other, but if the Turn axii gets bumped the Mech turns fast, skewing your aim.

Also, the "C" key will recenter your torso, legs, arms in a second so keep that handy.

So, to invert an Axis, just change the 0 to a 1 at the end of the line. You can edit or make a User.cfg with Notepad, just save it as .CFG instead of .TXT.

One final note. I don't know if they ever changed it, but originally they had Mech Turn set to the RZ axis instead of the X axis like MechWarrior 2-4 had it, but you can change the Axii in the Options Tab of the game and this does work.

You can read MWO's User.cfg info here, but you probably already did.
