What mechs honestly do you feel don't get enough love from people in general? For some reason they just aren't as popular as XYZ mech. Of course NONE will ever be as popular as the Urbie.

Valkyrie - I've always loved this mech, solid load out. Yet, at least in my experience amongst my friends and people back in the day I used to endlessly discuss this with, it was rarely mentioned. The Wasp was far more loved by my group of friends.

Griffin - Yes the loadout is not horribly intimidating, but the speed to keep up with the light mechs certainly is nice. I feel like this mech doesn't get a ton of love either. The Centurion gets a ton of love, but the Griffin has the speed to keep at range and pick at it in a fight. Of course the whole Yenlowang bit probably plays a roll in this. Plus, isn't a Griffin the first mech Yenlowang destroys with the new AC20, surprising him with it?

Emperor - You'd think the ONLY jump jet capable assault mech was the Highlander. A very capable mech that rarely seemed to get love from a lot of people. If it ever was included in the game it would add an option so there wasn't JUST Highlanders attempting assault DFA.

(This is all just an observation in my experience of reading the books, playing all the games, and dabbling meekly in tabletop.)

Good question... :D

1. Spider - One of the best "basic" recon mechs. Period. :D

2. Shadow Hawk - One of the best all-around mechs. You need scouting? The S-H is there. You need long range fire support? S-H has it.
There is a reason it was considered one of the workhorse designs of the Star League. Is it the best design? Heck no... But if I had to choose an entire company of mechs that were the same mech, with no idea of the battle they had to fight? I would pick Shadow Hawks. Swiss-Army knives in giant robot size is what they are.

Wolverine. It's perhaps the most versatile medium out there, and some 4th Succession War and Clan Invasion variants are just amazing. I was -really- hoping it would be a release mech, but hopefully it will will deployed later.

The Vixen was so overpowered it was evil. The firepower of a high-end medium mech, with speed near the top of any mech, AND armor!

Yeah, I think that was what was turned people off, the initial variant was unimpressively armed.

I would have to say the Mauler. It is ugly, and the long range "knock fest" king.

Trebuchet I always loved. A faster catapult basically with cheaper BV.

Second vote for Emperor. Highlander is totally overrated.

Stern ES: I have only recently become interested in the Emperor, with the EMP-6M and -6M2. Very slow, but the jump-jets and decent weapons range make up for it. Would actually be very happy if it showed up in MWO.

My own nominations for underappreciated 'Mechs...

ANV-** Anvil series: Specifically the -3R, which is one of the most durable brawlers I've seen. Decent speed and ECM help keep it alive even longer than its standard engine and good armor would suggest it should.

SKW-** Shockwave series: Neither design is optimized, but both are decent 'general use' Mechs. They have decent speed, enough armor to use up all their ammo before retreating, and good weapons range. Plus they look really neat.

T-IT-N11M Grand Titan: I've always felt it was superior to the Atlas in close combat. Looking like Optimus Prime is just a bonus. Decent use of Light Gauss to force enemies out of their camping spots, and the above average speed lets it bring its impressive melee attacks into play a bit more easily than a slower assault could.

All solid FWL designs, but not widely exposed to most BattleTech fans and thus they remain largely unknown. I'd love to see these show up in MWO sometime (though the SKW might be a while off, it's from 3085-ish!).

The commando! everyone seems to hate it for its slower pace and lack of jump jets, but I for one am rather fond of it
