Light - Firestarter. This 'mech is amazing in its intended forms of use, which is generally not direct combat except for anti-infantry. Using this 'mechs ability to start fires, it is the ultimate in area-denial and cover generation. Terrain can be an amazing tactical advantage, whether being used or being denied to the enemy, or generating a thick smoke cloud to protect a shorter range force while closing with the enemy.
Medium - Trebuchet. It's quick, it has firepower, and it has adequate protection for its intended role. As fire support for Medium and Light lances, it fulfills its job brilliantly. The only drawback to it is that its a little light on ammunition if it gets bogged down in a slugging match. Its backup 3 Medium Lasers will keep most scouts honest.
Heavy - Thunderbolt. You don't see this mech taken very often, but it's an excellent generalist design for its weight. It's highly armored, and packs a decent punch at most ranges. I'd personally take it over a Marauder or Warhammer in most situations.
Assault - Salamander. While a little later of a design than the others previously mentioned, this mech mounts an impressive 3 LRM20s with a significant amount of ammunition and armor to accomplish its goal. It still moves at a respectable 64 kph as well.

There is a reason it was considered one of the workhorse designs of the Star League. Is it the best design? Heck no... But if I had to choose an entire company of mechs that were the same mech, with no idea of the battle they had to fight? I would pick Shadow Hawks. Swiss-Army knives in giant robot size is what they are.

Exactly. Love me the Shadow Hawk.

Hmm.. how about a non-unseen mech? The Stalker is on my list but since it was actually a voted on mech I'll say I'm not the only one who appreciates it...
I'd have to go with the Goliath as well. Agree quads get no love but the Goliath probably had the least love of all the quads.

Again, Wolverine. Same tonnage, the weapons play well together, close range punch with the ML / SRM-6, and the mobility AND armor to stay alive. It's a command mech for a reason

I really don't get the Shadow Hawk (or Dragon, for that matter) love that I see. I don't mind it, and actually love the variety seen on the forums of what people appreciate versus don't. I just don't understand sometimes

Also, I dont get how anyone here can say Bushwacker. Bushwacker is one of the most beloved medium mechs in all of Battletech. It's iconic, had a good loadout, and looks amazing. Hard to say such a loved mech isn't getting enough love.

Jump jets. Good armor for it's size. Take some weight saving measures and put in a bigger engine and voila= Really heavy hitting light mech.

This. And it's available for MWO's timeline, too. Not as much range as some other mediums, but still a good reach with those large lasers (and a hefty punch too).
Also, the Falconer. Some good ranged firepower, nice knife-fight potential, and a whole-lotta jumping. It could dictate ranges to most things its weight class or above, and blow away smaller things. Sadly, we'll have to wait four years before it's available in MWO, even if it gets implemented.
I would also really like to see the Starslayer Its a really good 'Mech but it's not as popular as many other 50 tonner's like the Hunchback and the Centurion

IS - Bandersnatch
Nobody ever mentions this 'Mech and its one of my Favourites

Clan - Pouncer
Due to the Cougar and the Puma you don't see much of this mech

The Quintessential light mech: Fast, hard hitting and made of tin foil. A skilled pilot can be a gigantic pain in the *** to mechs far heavier then it thanks to it's long range and swift ground speed.
Medium: Hunchback
The hunchback always winds up being overshadowed by mechs with flashier tech and a bigger engine, but there are few medium weight battlemechs that can stalk a city so effectively.
Heavy: Galahad
Bet a bunch of you greenies have never even heard of this sucker. With two gauss rifles and 2 tons of ammo for each nobody honestly gave a rats *** that it had a top speed of 54 kmp/h. Hell, the mech was so great the clans did one of there wonderful upgrade jobs: the glass spider.
Assault: Stalker / Executioner
Really is a toss up since these are two amazing mechs, it's just that they get overshadowed by others for one reason or another.
For the stalker, I can only presume it's because nobody can take the visual design of it seriously, but the capabilities on it are amazing since it has overlapping fields of fire and can threaten at all ranges and take a decent beating. You're only hope if you're stuck facing one is that the pilot is too stupid to manage the weapon varieties and overheats his stupid ***.
Executioner is probably the most graceful assault mech ever designed, and only the clans (with there duellist nature) could have concieved it
Packing masc and Jump jets, the executioner is far more mobile then anything it's size has any right to be, and can still dish out a hellacious beat down in most of it's configurations.

The Guillotine: Despite a unique and iconic appearance, doesn't seem to be that popular of a 'mech. Not at it's best in a sniper duel, it excels in brawling, has great maneuverability, and can manage its heat load indefinitely.
The Flashman: Pure energy boat in the -7K form, or a very fast support platform in the -8K, it's a solid performer. Not the fanciest design, it looks like a turret with legs, but I've always liked the utilitarian look.
The Thug: Everything you'd like about a Warhammer, plus the frontal armor to finish a slugfest. Often overshadowed by the more common Awesome, its base variant is much more mobile, and has a delicious combination of point-damage PPCs and crit-seeking SRMs for when the battle closes in.
The Stalker: Another odd-looking behemoth, it packs terrific firepower, if you can manage the heat buildup. Good addition to any assault lance, with more long-range firepower than most of the ponderous I.S. 3025 assaults.

Some of the original laser boats never got quite the appreciation that the later Clan mechs got and I always thought that was odd. The Thug, Crab, and Grasshopper are all very capable and versatile even if they sometimes get a little hot.
The Clint is one that I use as a commander in my urban lance, despite being a little less armed than the Hatchetman, Centurion, and Enforcer; it has the speed and jump jets to get anywhere in a small city each turn and provide support to his men.
The Vulcan is a good garrison mech for taking out mixed units of infantry and light tanks, and has tremendous speed to help keep dangerous weapons like the PPC from hitting it at range.
The Dragon's been getting some bad press around here and I've never piloted it, but I've fought it enough times to know it's a very capable machine that you shouldn't take for granted. Especially in the Grand Dragon form.
Lastly the Assassin has always been a favorite of myself and some of my friends, but being on the forums here I've seen that many people don't know about it, or don't think it's that great.
