Because many / most players are from Europe. Of course you may ask why there are no plans for a european server then, which makes sense when you assume they'd like to satisfy their largest user base. Indeed...and it is a good question. Bye. ;)

Good question indeed....infact i am amazed no-one asked this question 7-ish months ago.....Oh hang on......

Ping times are primarily a factor of distrance from the server.

Assuming the servers are in Virginia (east coast, USA) and the end-users are on a good connection, I'd expect ping times of around:
Boston: 20-40ms
California: 40-60ms
Europe: 50-150ms
Asia/Australia: 200-300ms
India: 300-400ms (network paths in India are a mess)

I can't speak to Africa / South America as I have little experience with networking into that hemisphere.

It's physics. The speed of light only goes so fast.

The only way to really get around the issue is to setup datacenters in multiple geographies and match players only against other players in the same geo (i.e., no Japan vs Canada). This is why most major MMO's end up setting up servers in the US, Europe, and Asia.

Until MWO gets enough money to setup additional datacenters, you're going to see laggy plaiers.

Last I heard there are plans for international servers, only they aren't planned as part of the beta.
I guess when you have games as large as World of Warcraft that still don't have Australian servers (allegedly for financial reasons) you've got to cut PGI some slack.

My ping used to be 40-60 back in early CB, but since then it's gone up to around 110 typically. Not sure why, I still live in the same place, have the same computer, same ISP, and shut down most background programs but... there it is.

I feel like I'm the only one in the game without a lagshield when it comes to being ingame, maybe because I live in Toronto, but my ping is consistently 10-13, while everyone else? I'd say 90% of the matches I've played have been against 200-400 ping players, with maybe 10% of the players having under that, and 5% having reasonable (10-50) ping. Why so?

Most of the world doesn't live in Canada Toronto. Crazy, I know.

Over in West coast Canada I get between 75-120ms usually, as do most of my RL friends except for a guy on satellite internet that can vary from 120ms to 2000+ because it's crap.

North America is big enough that the ping from east to west coast is fairly significant difference.

Not complaining at all, just sharing.

Never had the problem in CB, but now I hardly ever play anymore because my ping varies wildly in the course of a single match. Seriously, I've seen it go from around 115ms to more than 2300ms, and all points in between, in a matter of a couple minutes. I'll blast away at an enemy at point-blank range and never seem to hit them, then take damage from invisible fire and get destroyed by enemies who aren't even in evidence (eg. in a tunnel, with only myself and my target present). Never mind all of the annoying teleporting/rubberbanding... Oh yeah, and I'm located in Seattle. Glad I didn't start my premium time yet. I just pop onto the forums and play the odd match here and there to see if anything has improved.

PS: Granted, I know that my connection isn't the best, but the performance delta between CB and OB is ridiculous. Here's to hoping it gets better...

I live in Brisbane, Australia and had pings usually around 300-350, but in the last week or so it has jumped up to around 500, with no change at my end, has anyone else had a similar problem lately?

and to anyone who thinks having a high ping is an advantage, maybe you should try playing with a terribad ping. Even Atlai seem to have lagshields...
