HI! I'm Newb! ;)

Seriously, I really like this game, but I'm not very good at it.

I've been lurking in the forums for a couple of days and decided to introduce myself. So far I play a lot of pug's and get my a** handed to me on a fiarly regular basis. I started off with a raven for no particular reason and it's pretty fun, until other light mech pilots that are actually GOOD decide to pick me apart - hah!

Just wondering, are there advantages to choosing a faction? Any other tips and advice?

No factions in game until Community Warfare is introduced. No fixed date for roll out of CW at this time.

Check out the guides section for lots of got tips on various mechs, builds, etc.

At this moment, there are no advantages to joining a faction. We will need to wait until the "real" game releases before we see the advantages and disadvantages of being with a faction, holding different planets in the galaxy, and other assorted neat things. Of course by then, repair and rearm costs will return which will further emphasize the need to join a faction.

Teamspeak is a VOIP (voice over internet provider) that many groups use to play.

Once you download teamspeak: found here
Try this public server called Comstar:
Server address: MWO.GameRadio.us
Username (try to match your MWO name)
Password: WordofBlake

If you'd like, many mercenary companies or guilds (but don't insult them with that name and never refer to them as 'clans') are always looking to recruit new members.

As a member of the ZhiZhu Mercenary Corporation, an hired affiliate of House Liao, I can say we have our doors open: http://zhizhu-mercs.net/home

The SkyeRangers Brigade, a highly organized, multi-tier group is a worthwhile suggestion. The skill levels of this group varies depending on their lances. We've encountered a few of their lances and have both victories and defeats. I'm not certain if they're affiliated with House Steiner or House Davion as their lances tend to encompass lore-friendly 'Mechs and plenty of mention of both houses. This group favors assault 'Mech lances with 1 to 3 lights and/or mediums. Almost always the commanding officer is in a DDC Atlas. Their site: http://www.skye-rangers.net/

The Blazing Aces: A very noteworthy group that has quickly become masters of the ECM "cloaking device" and deception warfare. 8-man drops against them often consist of 'feint' tactics, 'bait' and ambushes, and "Oh here's one 'Mech.. Wait there's 5. 7. GAAAH!!!" By the time you notice a Blazing Ace getting close to you, you're already swarmed. The group favors light, medium, and heavy 'Mechs with high speed and good ECM coverage and has never been seen (by a ZhiZhu) as using any Assault 'Mechs. Typically their forces are led by a Centurion. http://blazingaces.info/

I'm certain other groups will put their names forward, I've only mentioned the ones that I think can offer good guidance.

Good luck, Gunnthar.

Hi Gunnther, I'm not a newb. I die a lot too. especially in PUG matches. while I probably die less than you do, it is still not a very satisfying way to play. the problem is not so much pug teams vs. premade teams as it is that a slight advantage for one team can very quickly cascade into a stompifying win. organized teams are generally able to secure an advantage very quickly and effectively. a lot of times when both teams are disorganized pugs inevitably one team is less disorganized than the other. this team wins almost all the time. the best way to learn to play well is to hook up with a team of experienced players and talk to them and play with them. some tips:

lead fast targets even with lasers. due to lag and net coding issues where you think you are shooting is not always where the game thinks you are shooting and where the game thinks you are shooting is what is important.

watch your cross hairs. when you hit they will turn red. also watch your enemy's paper doll damage map.

don't fire wildly, pick your shots. it is better to land 2 shots in the same spot of your target then to land 4 shots in random different locations.

shoot them where they are weak. always use the R button to get info and then shoot them in the red armor spots or, if you are fast enough, get behind them and shoot them in the back.

keep moving. even in a slow mech don't stop.

defensive twisting. when your guns are recharging twist your torso about a lot or turn your most armored side to the bad guys that will spread out the damage or shield your weak spots with your strong spots. this way you live longer.

keep at it. you will get better.

Hey Gunnther! I'm new as well, been on a couple weeks now. First week I was lone sharking it, trying to type in game to communicate. I finnaly got going in TS3 and it makes a world of difference. Having a group in chat as you play turns up the addiction factor +10, very fun, and I do not lose as much either. Plus all the people are great at giving advice and helping you succeed. Welcome aboard!

And BTW don't spend your hard earned cbills too quickly yet, if you just started, you will get a cadet bonus that you won't get later, so save up and get some advice on chat or in the forums on a good mech to buy and how to upgrade it! Peace!

You know what brought home a few things to me in the first few weeks?

Youtube.

There's one line someone said, I can't remember what, but someone on the other team started running towards him and he says something like "Geez this guys impatient - it's like he doesn't know we have 12 more minutes to this game" (that's not a direct quote...probably a paraphrase...

But check out some videos :P

I agree with Kazly, youtube has a lot of help out there. A few people to include myself are working on tutorial vids for MWO. Just watching others fight might help you pick up some tricks and techniques as well.

For example, did you know you can be a submarine and submerge under the water to avoid enemy missiles? Now you do.

If I have your attention, I'm wanting input from new players to know if I covered everything in my tutorial topic list so that I'll have complete, comprehensive video guide. http://mwomercs.com/...newcomer-input/ I'll be pumping these videos out as quickly as I can. ;); Thanks ahead of time if you (who are reading this) check it out and note anything I might be missing.

The biggest issue for PUGs is working together, so joining something (house, merc group, clan, MWO teamspeak channel) is a lot better than just randomly dropping with others.

Focus fire will win most battles as it is and that requires communication about primary targets which is what Teamspeak is all about. Without voice comms it's just hard to figure out what is going on.

As a PUG I just try to work together with someone of similar size or much heavier so there is some focus fire, but I must admit, having 4 guys work together is much more effective.

In your raven, if you are not in a 3L with ECM you are prime pickings for the other team and likely first target (unless there is a commando with no ecm on your team too). Keeping with the main body also helps, but that really depends on if the other stick together or not.

Good Luck! and House Liao is always looking for good pilots so feel free to stop by and join in for a few drops.

The fun levels in this game skyrocket if you can work together with even one other person on coms. I personally love four man groups. VoIP is practically a must, though. Teamspeak 3, C3, Mumble, Ventrillo, Skype.... All valid options to use, though people tend to have their preferences. Teamspeak is by far the most used one on these boards, but I highly recommend C3 to those of you who have not as the audio is noticeably clearer and the server hosting is absolutely free.

You can either join a unit or just make friends in game by playing and watching. Not entirely sure how I found the group of random players I game with regularly now, but having three people you can rely on and coordinate with really ups the ante.

I couldn't use C3 and haven't tried since it came out. Every time it connected it crashed my MW game. v.v; And I'm the sort that runs the game at max settings.

Weird. It only crashes the game for me when I run it with both TS and C3 open at the same time. When it is just C3 or just TS I have zero issues. o_0 And I too run max settings. Maybe it is a system resource issue?

Greetings. I used to die countless times when I first started this as well, back when there was no bonuses during the first 25 matchs and had R and R. I hope what you are getting is not as bad as it was for me. I used a trail mechs and died then lost EVERY match until I got my first real mech, a Catapult C4 with LRM 20s, 900 rounds of Artemis ammo, two medium lasers and a 145k repair bill on death.

I use team speak 3, Incase you want to check out other servers or programs we have a thread on them here http://mwomercs.com/...e-chat-servers/
