Actually Warner Brothers already gave them the go ahead to do a script for a possible sequel. Del Toro has hinted that the sequel will involve a Mecha-Kaiju. (See the MechaGodzilla video above).

i think they just need to do a giant robot fighting league and have another portal open mid movie.
or said giant robot fighting league vs ai powered mecha kaiju, and an uber one goes nuts and drags normal kaiju with it and all of a sudden you got an army of jaegers vs an army of kaijus. (this would be AWESOME)

If Pacific Rim does well in China and Japan, and I expect it to be, it will likely get a sequel.

I have yet to heard about nuclear missile that can be fire from land into water and still stay on course or sub carrying nuclear torpedoes.

2015.... Still no Mechwarrior Movie.
I dont know why. There are huge Story with closed Chapters. Each one of them should be worth enough for a movie.....
Even Titanic gets a 2nd Part and we must suffer....
I guess, the Problem is: The "normal" People. Would he understand the brave and Bloody way of a clan Warrior?
Could he decide between Davion and Steiner?
They dont believe, that such complex Thing would a Film for the Mainstream.
They underestimate the People.
Sorry for this.... But i get enraged when i see what a ******** in the cinemas is and such a great and good Story get Lost by the money.
(sorry for my bad English)

Tell me aboutit; I remember a discussion a few years back on some website or another (I cannot remember the name of it) where a debate was going on about all the new Transformer movies being released and none for BattleTech, and one poster said thathe would even pay out of his own pocket to be in a BT movie. Crazy or not, I reckon I would put out my own wallet to do the same thing, even if it was for just as a background character.
