A convoy protection style mode would be pretty neat. especially if the convoys too different routes and such.

I would prefer a "vip" approach, because I think that players could get advantage of an automatic convoy and destroy it with no much problem.
If I have to destroy a vehicle driven by mr potato, I will focus on the vehicle instead of who's guarding it
If you replace the convoy with one or more player driven mechs... that's another story, you could have this mechs with a lot of armor and no weapon, not so much armor but some close range weapons

A "VIP" mode would be something I could get behind, but a convoy? Those are my least favorite missions in any game regardless of which game it is.

You'll probably want to stay away from this game then.
A convoy mission would be interesting in MWO - hell, anything other than our current options of "Death Match" or "Death Match" would be interesting.
VIP mode would be fun though, especially if the VIP was randomly selected at the start of the match.

Either VIP or convoy would be freaking awesome. Convoy would be harder to pull off; you would have to make the convoy tough enough that one or even two fast mechs breaking through the defensive line couldn't wreck the convoy instantly. Maybe even give the convoy enough firepower to take on a light or two and win. Allowing the team commander to issue limited commands to the convoy would also be interesting.
As for VIP mode, again, easier to implement. The question is should the randomly selected VIP use the mech that they dropped with, or should all VIPs pilot the same mech or class/weight of mechs? If the VIP uses their own mech, a game where the VIP is an Atlas vs. a Commando is going to play alot differently. However, maybe thats part of the fun, having to change your tactics on the ground to suit the relative vulnerability/maneuverability/firepower/range of the VIP. Instead of being able to plan ahead and field a lance that is perfect for guarding one particular kind of mech, you would have to adapt to whatever mech gets chosen.
If, on the other hand, the VIP drops in a computer selected mech, you can have more standardized matches, and balancing the teams becomes easier. For instance, if you are on the VIP team, and your VIP is an assault, and the teams are balanced by class, you could find yourself at a disadvantage due to having to keep that assault away from the enemy more, hampering your firepower and preventing it from soaking up its fair share of damage. If the computer selected the mech of the VIP, you could do something like asynchronous teams, where the VIP is not taken into account in the matching process, and given a mech with little damage dealing ability, say a couple small lasers and a MG or something.
