I'm looking at using the Cataphract 2X as a sniper, with ER laser, gauss and some LRMs. I know it's not an ideal sniper mech, but I like to mix things up and my other Cataphracts are brawlers.

My question is, what happens if you put an LRM 20 in the 2X left arm? Or even 2 x LRM20? Does it shoot 10 salvos of 4 missiles? How many missiles can it fire per salvo?

I see some people equip 2 x SRM6 on the Cataphract 2X. Is that 3 salvos of 4 missiles?

It's a little funny (bug probably),when you shoot 2xSRM6 there will be 2 volleys.
IF you set the launcher to chain fire mode it'll shoot in 2 volleys per rack (4 volleys total).

About LRM20,theoretically it should shoot 5 volleys 4 rocket in each. But due to above,I can't tell you what'll happen when you'll shoot 2xLRM20 at once.

it's only possible to fit 1 lrm20 and 1 lrm15 at most in the 2x

and yeah, i can testify to the 2xsrm6 doing that

Ive fallen back in love with my 2X in hte last few days, 2 srm6 in the arm, 3 medium lasers, and a ultra AC5, and goes 87 km/h; it can harass with the AC5 at long range, and absolutely shred anything thats stupid enough to get within 270 meters

to make this post relevant, it shoots 12 missiles in 2 salvos,

As a self proclaimed 2x Master I will answer your query.

The 2x with an LRM 20 will launch a nice snake trail of 5 x 4 missile volleys.

The 2x works well with LRM's, I run an LRM15.

You haven't enough space on the arm to run two LRM20's. You can run 2 15's however or a 20 and a 15.

If you want sniper power, combine an ERPPC with a GR or UAC5. With those and your LRM you become a long range killing machine.

Alright, thanks to everyone for your help. Especially the now officially recognised 2X Master.

This is what I have in mind, although I will consider swapping the ER Laser with an ER PPC.

I think that's not a bad build. You will hit hard from long range and also your GR and LL can be used in close.

No XL engine also means that you can brawl with the GR without worying about being cored.

A little on the slow side, however you are long range.

My only suggestion is to try and find one ton somewhere for TAG to use in your LT or RT energy slot. If you can spare another ton add a ML for a little more brawling power.

It's a waste not to use those nice energy slots up, but with 2 lrm15's you really need TAG

So, first off, new player and I'm not very good... I find my dmg and survivability is best when I can snipe early game so as to not get surrounded too early, and then later in the match move in for kills and closer support once I know the lay of the land. An avg match I'm doing 120-160dmg in trials mechs and only living if I solely pick my battles and don't get jumped.

To that end, I've been trying to build a dual-use 2X - not pure brawler like most builds I see nor pure snipe like this post. While this multi-use may not be the 'best', I think it might work for me.

LRM15 for assist + Gauss for early sniping, only then resorting to SRM6+2ML (and Gauss) when moving in (or getting ran into by enemy)
CTF-2X

Thoughts? I looked at a more typical 2xLRM10, AC/5, 3 ML build, but I feel the gauss gives more options and trading one LRM for a SRM6 would help if I run into anything nasty and/or can't run away/dodge.

Being new, this is a lot of CBills so I can't afford to buy equipment for multiple tries so I've just been spending time in the mechlab.

Edit: I'm a little leary on the low LRM ammo count. I could drop armor in legs and useless right arm to get another ton for a 2nd LRM ammo.

This 2X is one of the best "all-arounders" I have. You can snipe with the PPC and it gives you a good blend of pinpoint and spread damage on each alpha. The PPC and AC10 recycle rates also allow you to pop two shots in from each under the standard laser/SRM refire delays... It's also fairly fast for a cataphract - and that makes getting in and out for quick shots a little easier.
