I've been playing since open beta began. I'm sure this has come up elsewhere and I thought I'd add my 2 cents.
This game is a very different game when you run with your buddies versus on your own.
With my buddies, we have great opportunities for communication via teamspeak. Even with 4 other solos, a lance of us is a match for just about any challenge and the games are lots of fun.
When I'm on my own, it's a crap-shoot. Solo you face the prospect of being in a team with no ECM, no teamspeak/communication and a host of other issues. It's generally not nearly as enjoyable as when I run with my buddies.
I enjoy MWO because it's Battletech. I'll always stick with it for that reason alone. For newbs to Battletech and MWO specifically, the learning curve is really steep. I gave up on World of Tanks because, as a newb, it wasn't fun solo.
For newbs, especially those who aren't hooked into the Battletech universe, my suggestion would be that 1v1 battles and 2v2 battles be an option. This is a great game where team tactics rule. Newbs need to learn how their mech functions before running in a PUG.
Anyway, with my buddies this game gets a solid B+ for enjoyment and fun. Solo, its a lot less enjoyable.
Trying not to rant and 1v1, 2v2 matches might make soloing more enjoyable and help newbs with the learning curve. I'm sure this has been suggested elsewhere. And I continue to hope this game takes off.

We need to get some kind of in-game VoiP system. They were alredy going to do that with C3, but never got around to actually do it for reasons unknown.
It may not make 50/50 matches a reality, but at least it will make the game fair, since pugs, even if they want to, can't effectively communicate in team.
