Since the appearance custom engined stock variants it had always been my mind.
For example when you buy the Cata-3D variant, the reason it is expensive seems to be this:
We pay for the chassis, PLUS the amount of XL engine that is replaced with the standard version.
I think that is perfectly fine, but I for example; have many unused engines in my arsenal, leftovers from my sold mech, be it XL or STD.
Firstly I don't need to have a new and very expensive XL engine, secondly its too much of a problem c-bill-wise to stack up all that money for an item I won't use.
I think it would be very plausible if we could buy mechs at the mech bay with, or without engine. It could be simply done with a question when you hit the "buy c-bill" button. (Just like the question when you try to sell the mech and it asks if you want to sell the components as well)
Sry if the idea was mentioned before, I don't know; I don't follow the forums closely enough.

I'm actually curious about this too, and from my search I couldn't find anything useful.

Does anyone know if this has been asked or answered? If we aren't going to be able to eventually buy mechs without engines, I need to re-prioritize my cbill spending.

This is a great idea. I bought the CTF-3D once and sold it (except for the engine) because i didn't have enough mechbays, but now i want to buy it again and it comes with such an expensive engine. Selling and buying engines can be a big problem cause it takes some time untill people realize that it's way better to just stay with those engines than sell than. Sometimes we just want those 2,000,000 c-bills to buy another mech and it's faster to just sell an engine, but after sometime we want a different engine for a different build and we end up having to buy that same engine again.

I think so too, this just makes a lot of sense.

As people progress in the game and buy engines for custom builds, they're just naturally going to accrue engines. A lot of the time, we'll already have the engine we want before we buy our next mech.

Outside of a cost increase to do this, it won't happen. It's an intentional c-bill sink.
