I was just in a match where we got 3 Awesomes and the opp team got 1 Atlas and 2 Stalkers. They easily won, the Awesomes were just gone even though we were in a fairly tight group of all our Assaults and Heavies. And it's always like that. The Awesome is just not comparable to the Stalker or Atlas so it shouldn't rated as comparable in the drop balancing.

The Awesome is an assault 'mech. Know that you will be dropping against bigger assault 'mechs when you make the CHOICE to pilot an Awesome.

What? The Awesome is an 80-ton mech... that makes it an assault mech. The classes are not based on what brings the most firepower, they are based solely on tonnage
20-35 tons = Light
40-55 tons = Medium
60-75 tons = Heavy
80-100 tons = Assault

They are in the same class, there is no changing that... like Hotthedd says when someone chooses to take an Awesome, they are knowingly piloting the lightest assault mech available. Changing the Awesome's rating would be literally ********.

The Awesome unfortunately lost its skinny torso and higher conical torso's in MWO's 3D "interpretation." So what we have now is an easily killable Awesome with an enormous "kill me here" center torso. Basically looks like a frog now, with guns.

The weight classes are purely arbitrary, and the fluff actually had 'Mechs as small as the Griffin and Thunderbolt "originally classified as assault." That said, it would not be (I'm pretty sure I know which word you tried to say) to declare 80 tons to be merely heavy, and you should feel terrible for thinking so.

THAT SAID, the lore of the Battletech universe is what it is, and PGI tends to not mess with this fact. At this period in history, 80 tons is assault, and so it must remain.

OP's real problem is three: the ample hitbox of the Awesome's front profile; the matchmaker; and the general attractiveness of the alternatives. In 2-5 months at the apparent one 'Mech a month pace, we'll have the Highlander - it's in the queue with Trebuchet, JagerMech, Orion, and Flea - so that could only get "worse" for the Awesome.

But again, it is what it is. Keep calm and burrow lasers into those stupid skullheads.

Of course the weight classes are arbitrary, but in the fluff they are what they are. You cannot just say that one particular 80-ton is a heavy when it is clearly stated that 80-100 ton mechs are assault.

You are right that PGI will not (and should not) change the fluff if it can be helped. I also agree that the OP's problems are what you said.

Does anyone know exaclty how matchmaking works ? Does it really assume that one mech of a class is like another one of the same class, no matter the weight ? Or does each team have (roundabout) the same tonnage (as in, Team A has Awesome and two Ravens (150 tons), Team B has Atlas and two Commando (also 150 tons) ?

It really assumes that one 'Mech of a class is like another of the same class, no matter the weight, no matter the tech-base, and no matter the ECM potential.

The only thing that matters is light, medium, heavy, or assault.

The real issue has nothing to do with whether someone calls the Awesome an assault mech but rather with the Matchmaker that queues all assault class mechs into a single group so that 3 awesomes is considered the equivalent of 3 atlas. The problem is not with the name but the matchmaking. If and when the matchmaker includes tonnage as a factor in balancing then the issue may be reduced.

The Awesome has always been a rather broad-bodied 'Mech - never anywhere near what might reasonably be called "skinny"... :)

Original looks better. Skinnier Center Torso vs. FAT MWO AWESOME CENTER TORSO. Its kind of ******* obvious. Which looks more imposing and awesome? The Original Awesome.
