That way you can choose , which people you want to be able to communicate with. In game chat can be annoying otherwise, you don't want to hear some random stupid dude in internet screaming or throwing his temper tantrum.

Team Fortress 2 does this beautifully. Besides, with ingame comms suppot the server could simulate communications link jamming etc.

Well, think about it for a moment (and I've used Teamspeak/Mumble for years)...
What comprises the typical pub server? Lets say there are 16 players per team. How many of those players on a single team are comprised of a single clan typically?
Speaking from experience at most, on average a given night, probably 4, maybe 5 at most. That leaves 11-12 players on your team that aren't part of your clan. Mechwarrior has always been about teamplay, right?
So, with your logic, you are suggesting that you play with just your clan on that pub server and ignore the rest of your team? Isn't that counterproductive for teamwork?
I'd say yes.
If everyone on the pub shares in the same voice comms, you're able to finally achieve the goal of actually having teamwork--this is what Mechwarrior is about. There is no way you'll fill up a server with 16 clanmates every single night, it ain't gonna happen. I've been playing in leagues for various games since 1996 online, before even teamspeak existed.
Server side voice comms fulfill the goal of bringing everyone together on the server right at that time. It's much better than having a few guys do their thing while everyone else picks their noses.

I played LOTRO for several years, which has in-game voice chat, but we used both. As some have mentioned, in-game chat can occasionally become annoying when you get in a pick-up match and end up with some obnoxious person or a drunk guy and no way to manage them in chat. If they have an individual mute feature, that may help some. However, as for team play, we always found it to our advantage to set up a TeamSpeak server or something similar in addition to in-game. TeamSpeak can be set up with pass protected rooms that only members have access to and also have an open room for anyone that wants to join. Obnoxious people can be permanently banned from the TeamSpeak servers by IP address as well. And...there will be the occasional need to ban someone. I will likely be using both.

i would love to see Team speak, when i play LoL with a third party, half the time i end up yelling at some one who cant hear me, along with my friends who can hear me. Team speak would make things better for everyone, and... if some one is being a Douch... there is allways mute button
Also to have in game chat would open up for some amazing ideas, you could jam enemy comms, listen in, feed false information, and all around just mess with your enemies, giveign scout mechs an even better role,
Id love to cut off one of therer units, have my heavies kill it, than scoot away before the enemy new you were on there flanks.
it would make surprise attacks even better, and with the right team work and coridnation, it would be amazing
