Hey guys,
It has been a long time since I battled in my mechs... In fact... I still haven't activated my premium time since open beta started! Anyway, double XP weekend is upon us, so I figure now is as good a time as any. I booted my client up and started browsing. .. first thing I noticed is the new mechs... so before I jump back into MWO I was wondering what mechs are working well and which are under performing?
What other big changes should I look out for?
And ... any clans out there need an experienced "noob"?

Every light mech uses ssrms (unless they're a Spider, then they jump a lot). Jenners have been phased out. ECM makes mechs pretty much untargettable at range, and screws up your map close up (while still preventing missile lock). Cicadas aren't really a big deal. Stalkers carry a bunch of weapons. Conquest is Assault mode with more capture points.
Oh, and watch out for srm Catapults and Stalkers.

I hope you have a brawler in your mechlab. You'll need it.

Well the Raven 3L is by far the best mech right now. That is not to say I drive mine often. I have mostly been sticking with fast mediums and heavies, since I can beat the other med/heavy that the other team is forced to have because of matchmaking. Assaults are just a bit too slow for me.
So I guess mechs that are "best" right now would be raven, atlas (especially DC) and stalkers because of their hardpoints. Catapults and Cataphrachs are popular, along with hunchbacks. But yeah it really comes down to what you want to play and what you are good with.

New mas
Hmm. It's too late for double XP weekend, but the event was the ideal time to level all the mech variants you don't care for much so you can max your efficiencies and all that.
What mechs are new to you? If it's only the Stalker and the Spider, ignore the Spider. The Stalker 3F with 4 Medium Lasers, 4 SRM6s (with Artemis if you like) and a bunch of Double Heat Sinks is an excellent mech IMO. Stalkers have only a small torso twist range, but the 3F has a higher than the others, so you are relatively flexible to chooce between short or long range builds with him, without beign completely overwhelmed by light mechs.
The Cataphract 4X is great if you want to build a mech with a lot of ballistic weapons. The 3L, 1X and 2X are also not that bad, either. I personally won't spend money o nthe hero version, though it has some interesting potential (Triple Gauss Rifle or Triple UAC Builds).
